Primary Purpose

Responsible for the coordination of special education programs and the implementation of the ARD process.

Qualifications/Skills
  • Education/Certification:
    • Master's degree or higher from recognized, accredited college or university, preferred.
    • Valid Texas Teacher Certificate or Teaching Certificate from out of state appropriate for position preferred.
    • Valid Texas supervisor's, mid-management, principalship or licensed professional counselor's certification, diagnostician's certificate, licensed by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists as a LSSP, certified in special education, or qualified for a special assignment permit in supervision, mid-management or counseling preferred.
  • Special Knowledge/

    Skills:

    • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Proficient in the effective use of technology.
    • Physical capacity to meet needs of students with physical disabilities.
    • Ability to work effectively with both adults and children.
  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience as a classroom teacher, preferred.
Major Duties and Responsibilities Coordination of Services
  • Collaborate with general and special education teachers, administrators and parents to provide education support for students with disabilities.
  • Provide technical assistance to instructional staff concerning the teaching/learning process.
  • Assist general education teachers in implementation of individual student accommodations and modifications as designed by ARD committees.
  • Assist teachers and assistant principals in designing effective behavioral interventions for students experiencing behavioral difficulties.
  • Serve and chair as administrative representative for ARD meetings, as assigned. Provide staff development for campus personnel related to Special Education processes, requirements, etc.
  • Perform functions related to assessment as it relates to the special education evaluation process.
Student Growth and Development
  • Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits. Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by campus principal.
  • Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of school district.
  • Assist with needs of students with physical disabilities.
  • Schedule student staffings to support and resolve student, teacher or parental concerns.
  • Provide leadership to programming and course selection for students with disabilities.
  • Keep abreast of current issues and methodologies in the education of students with disabilities.
Classroom Management and Organization
  • Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students. Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities. Assist in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials.
  • Attend required meetings and complete required reports.
Communication
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals and teachers. Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Collaborate with others to provide for learner needs.
  • Consult with parents and other appropriate school personnel concerning each student's intellectual, academic social, emotional and physical development.
Professional Growth and Development
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills. Keep informed of and comply with state, district and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
