Purpose:
Responsible for the instructional program and guidance of students identified as needing special education services.
- Bachelor's degree in related field.
- Valid Texas Teacher Certificate or an out‑of‑state teaching certification appropriate for the position.
- ESL Certification required during the first year if not already obtained.
- Certification must meet Federal and/or State law requirements for this position.
- Must obtain Mandt Training Certification.
- Minimum of three years teaching experience in a self‑contained classroom for students with Autism.
- Knowledge of structured teaching strategies specific to students with Autism.
- Extensive knowledge of effective instructional practices, including structured teaching for students with severe cognitive and other developmental disabilities.
- Extensive knowledge in developing and implementing effective behavior intervention plans for students with severe behavior concerns, including principles of applied behavior analysis.
- Proficient in collecting data to establish strengths, needs, and goals for specially designed instruction based on enrolled grade level standards and functional needs, as well as progress monitoring.
- Physical capacity to lift, prompt, transfer and otherwise assist students with physical and behavioral disabilities (e.g., ability to lift 50 lbs).
- Trained in de‑escalation and restraint techniques as required by the district.
- Ability to physically manage secondary students.
- Experience with managing student safety for students exhibiting elopement.
- Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in the effective use of technology.
- Ability to work effectively with both adults and children.
- Adhere to the district's philosophy of instruction. Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill district curriculum requirements and provide written evidence of preparation as required.
- Prepare lessons that accommodate differences in student learning styles.
- Present subject matter in accordance with Texas Education Agency guidelines, board policies, and administrative regulations.
- Participate in the identification and evaluation of learner competencies.
- Recommend appropriate goals and objectives for learner needs.
- Develop and write students' IEPs.
- Follow specific instructional objectives based on the student's learning style.
- Implement new methodologies, philosophies, and innovations.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the school district.
- Assist with the needs of students with physical disabilities.
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
- Attend required meetings and complete required reports.
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents.
- Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Collaborate with others to provide for learner needs.
- Consult with parents and appropriate school personnel concerning each student's intellectual, academic, social, emotional, and physical development.
