Overview
Machine Vision & Inspection System Development
Responsibilities- Design and implement automated inspection solutions including:
- Part presence/absence
- Dimensional verification
- Cosmetic inspection
- Code reading (1D/2D, OCR/OCV)
- Defect detection and classification
- Select, configure, and deploy industrial vision hardware and software platforms, including:
- Cognex
- Keyence
- Matrox / Zebra
- Basler
- Other comparable vision and imaging technologies
- Develop vision algorithms using rule-based and data-driven techniques appropriate to inspection risk and regulatory requirements.
- Integrate vision systems with PLCs, motion systems, robotics, and HMI/SCADA platforms.
- Support electrical design and software architecture decisions related to inspection hardware, lighting, optics, and network topology.
- Participate in machine debug, factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and customer training activities.
- Lead or support vision-focused Proofs of Principle (PoP) during:
- Quotation phases
- High-risk technical assessments
- New inspection technology evaluations
- Organize, maintain, and continuously improve the internal vision lab, including:
- Cameras, lenses, lighting, and fixtures
- Sample parts and inspection artifacts
- Software licenses and development tools
- Develop reusable PoP methodologies, templates, and test documentation to improve consistency and speed of technical evaluations.
- Support internal training activities related to machine vision and inspection best practices.
- Collaborate with Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Software Engineering, and Systems Engineering to define inspection requirements and system-level interfaces.
- Provide hands-on support during:
- Electrical assembly
- Controls integration
- Vision system tuning and optimization
- Troubleshoot complex inspection issues involving optics, lighting, mechanics, motion, and software interactions.
- Communicate inspection risks, assumptions, and limitations clearly to project teams and management.
- Support Applications Engineering and Controls Engineering Management with:
- Inspection concept feasibility assessments
- Technical risk identification
- Initial estimates for vision and inspection scope during quotation
- Provide input on inspection system cost drivers, complexity, and schedule impacts.
- Participate in technical reviews during proposal development and early project phases.
- Mentor Associate and mid-level Controls Engineers on:
- Vision system fundamentals
- Inspection strategy development
- Debug and optimization techniques
- Share lessons learned and best practices through:
- Design reviews
- Informal training sessions
- Standards and guideline contributions
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to inspection system robustness, reuse, and validation readiness.
- Support verification and validation activities aligned with:
- GAMP principles
- Internal quality procedures
- Customer documentation requirements
- Assist in the development and execution of:
- Inspection test plans
- Validation protocols
- Traceability documentation
- Ensure inspection system design supports regulatory expectations for Medical Device and Life Sciences equipment.
- Stay current with emerging technologies in:
- Machine vision
- Inspection algorithms
- Machine learning and AI-assisted inspection
- Contribute to the evaluation and adoption of new inspection tools, methods, and platforms.
- Participate in departmental standards development and process improvement initiatives
- Essential Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Systems, or related field), or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in automation, machine vision, or inspection system development.
- Hands-on experience developing industrial machine vision systems using multiple platforms (e.g., Cognex, Keyence, Matrox/Zebra, Basler).
- Experience integrating vision systems with PLC-based control systems.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, software, optics, and mechanical interfaces.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in English, both spoken and written
- Familiarity with machine learning concepts as applied to inspection (classification, anomaly detection, data-driven vision).
- Experience with high-level programming languages such as Python, C#, or similar for inspection tooling or data analysis.
- Exposure to GAMP documentation standards and validation practices.
- Experience supporting quotation activities or early-phase technical risk assessments.
- Familiarity with industrial networking concepts (Ethernet/IP, TCP/IP).
- Experience working in regulated industries (Medical Device, Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical)
Salary range $100,000-$120,000
