The Research and Development Engineer III is responsible for creating ideas for new and improved oilseed extraction equipment and processes. The role involves quickly evaluating merit using experience, distilling and sharing ideas with others for screening, and performing quantitative screening using basic assumptions. It also includes evaluating new ideas, designing and constructing prototypes and lab apparatus, performing lab experimentation and pilot testing, and analyzing test results and data.

The engineer must develop new ideas, compile, document, and communicate results, and determine and plan next development steps, including gaps to address and scale of next prototype or test. Additionally, the role develops R&D capabilities, leads training and development in data analysis, fabrication, analytical methods, and the delivery of tools usable by the larger R&D team. The engineer improves R&D effectiveness, drafts, reviews, and manages patent activity, and communicates results and feedback with commercial and engineering teams.

Customer communication in support of commercial activities and use of equation‑based process simulation software (Aspen Custom Modeler, Siemens gPROMS, AVEVA Process Simulation) are also required.

Qualifications

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering and 3 years of related research and development engineering experience. Candidates must also have 36 months of experience with each of the following:

  • Researching and designing processes and products related to processing agricultural or biological products using experimental methods.
  • Using equation-based process simulation software:
    Aspen Custom Modeler, Siemens gPROMS, AVEVA Process Simulation.
  • Performing quantitative ELISA assays on both solid and liquid biological and agricultural materials.
  • Designing, operating, and automating bench-scale experimental apparatus using the Arduino platform.
  • Handling, characterizing, and purifying triglycerides and phospholipids.
  • Full‑time position located in Blaine, MN. Expected travel 5%; must be able to travel as needed to evaluate technology vendors, support customers, and attend academic conferences. Domestic and international travel may be required.
