The first level of the Equipment Maintenance Series is responsible for performing skilled work involving preventative maintenance and mechanical repair of heavy equipment. Responsibilities may include: inspecting machines for maintenance needs; determining and conducting appropriate maintenance, repair or replacement work; and operating applicable equipment and tools.

- Performs repairs, including major overhauls, on all types of equipment such as trucks up to 50,000 GVW, farm type tractors, all types of construction equipment used in the construction and maintenance of streets and parks, and all other City vehicles.
- Performs major service work on fuel, hydraulic, electrical, exhaust, suspension, steering, braking, driver train and transmission systems.
- Fabricates parts, mountings, and other accessories using metal fabrication and welding techniques and practices.
- Installs electrical and other type accessories in City-owned and operated equipment.
- Maintains work area and tools in clean and workable fashion.
- Contacts parts dealers and/or equipment dealers to obtain information regarding parts or equipment on a limited basis as needed. Assists in gathering information for new equipment or specification development for the purchase of new equipment.
- Prepares an appropriate repair order form for each job assigned in a complete and accurate manner.
- Performs minor body and fender work, welding and/or prefabricating as required.
- Recommends repair or replacement of parts and/or entire equipment units as may be justified.
- Test drives repaired City trucks and other pieces of equipment on public roads as needed.
- Remains knowledgeable of new developments and new innovations in equipment maintenance and parts design and provides input regarding methods by which new techniques and new practices could benefit City operations.
- Responsible for working overtime, shift changes, emergency call outs, or to be on call as necessary or assigned. Normal working hours:
Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. - Remains knowledgeable of oil and lubrication standards, and lubrication requirements for the City vehicle fleet.
- Assists in maintaining parts inventory, ordering of replacement parts and accessories.
- Performs snow plowing duties when necessary.
- Remains knowledgeable of current computer-aided diagnostic equipment and its proper uses.
- Remains knowledgeable of and is able to implement and carry out preventative maintenance programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
- Knowledge of applicable equipment and tools.
- Knowledge of welding procedures and processes.
- Knowledge of automotive servicing procedures and processes.
- Knowledge of engine repair procedures and processes.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures and processes.
- Knowledge of recordkeeping procedures and processes.
- Knowledge of safe work practices.
- Knowledge of operating applicable tools and equipment.
- Ability to read and comprehend technical repair manuals.
- Ability to maintain and repair vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to detect and diagnose vehicle and equipment malfunctions.
- Ability to perform preventive maintenance activities.
- Ability to maintain records.
- Ability to operate computers and applicable software applications.
- Ability to communicate and interact with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Nine-month vo-tech training certificate in automotive, heavy equipment and/or small engine repair.
- Previous experience within the last eight years to include:
- One year of experience utilizing computer-aided diagnostic equipment or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
