Position Summary

Serve as the law enforcement officer of Beaufort County Community College Police Department.

Employment Type

Full‑Time; 40 hours per week (Estimated Hours per Week: 40)

Minimum Qualifications
  • Basic Law Enforcement Certification.
  • Successful completion of a thorough background investigation, medical and psychological exam, and drug screening.
  • Ability to perform a large number of duties on foot/bicycle, such as securing campus facilities, and work outside in both cold and heat conditions for extended periods.
  • Willingness to work a flexible, changing schedule that could include nights, weekends, on‑call after hours, and short notice as needed.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Five years law enforcement experience.
  • Experience with campus law enforcement.
Responsibilities
  • Enforce all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances on campus; investigate criminal activity, make arrests, file charges, and testify in court.
  • Perform high‑visibility patrols of all buildings, parking lots, and grounds.
  • Coordinate all emergency procedures during evening hours in cooperation with Student Services, Continuing Education, Switchboard, and Library personnel; communicate with these entities and the campus community when evacuation is necessary.
  • Enforce campus parking and traffic regulations; issue parking tickets, warning tickets, and state citations as needed.
  • Conduct physical security checks of all campus facilities and ensure doors are locked during evening hours.
  • Deliver emergency and non‑emergency messages.
  • Assist with special school‑sponsored functions on and off campus.
  • Direct traffic when necessary and set up parking for events requiring special parking needs.
  • Maintain proficiency and certifications in firearms and non‑lethal use of force (pepper spray, ASP baton, hand‑to‑hand techniques).
  • Submit maintenance reports on malfunctioning locks, lighting, and fire/safety hazards.
  • Prepare accurate, clear, and concise police reports promptly.
  • Deliver daily deposits/deliveries to the bank and post office when directed.
  • Unlock and jump‑start vehicles and assist motorists as requested.
  • Provide vehicle and foot escorts to campus citizenry.
  • Serve on assigned committees.
  • Assume duties of the Chief of Police in their absence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Compensation

    Salary: $43,000 – $50,000, based on the college’s salary plan and commensurate with education and experience.

    FLSA Status

    Non‑Exempt; 40 hours per week.
