Minimum Qualifications

  • Basic Law Enforcement Certification.
  • Successful completion of a thorough background investigation, medical and psychological exam and drug screening.
  • Ability to perform a large number of duties on foot/bicycle, such as securing campus facilities.
  • Ability and willingness to work outside in both cold and heat conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Requires individual to work a flexible changing schedule that could include nights, weekends and on-call after hours and short notice as needed.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Five years law enforcement experience.
  • Experience with campus law enforcement.

The Police Officer is responsible for the enforcement of all applicable laws on the Beaufort County Community College campus. This individual must possess strong oral and written communication skills and be able to deal effectively with the campus population. He/she must meet and maintain minimum standards required of Police Officers by authority of the North Carolina General Statute 74E. A valid NC operator’s license is required.

This individual will be required to work evenings and Saturdays and any other time when requested. Approximately ninety percent of the patrol function will be performed on foot. Individual reports to the Chief of Police. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Enforcing all federal, state and local laws/regulations/ordinances at Beaufort County Community College; investigating any criminal activity that occurs, making arrests, and filing charges as appropriate; testifying in court.
  • Performing high visibility patrols of all buildings, parking lots, and grounds.
  • Coordinating all emergency procedures during evening hours in cooperation with Student Services, Continuing Education, Switchboard, and Library personnel. Communicating with these entities by telephone and radio during emergency and non-emergency situations and informing the entire campus community when evacuation is necessary.
  • Enforcing the campus parking and traffic regulations. Issuing campus parking tickets, warning tickets, and state citations to offenders if needed.
  • Making physical security checks of all campus facilities. Checking and locking every door on campus when working during evening hours.
  • Delivering emergency and non-emergency messages.
  • Working special school-sponsored functions both on and off campus at times other than the normal work schedule dictates.
  • Directing traffic when necessary.
  • Setting up parking for school-sponsored events that require special parking needs.
  • Maintaining required level of proficiency and certifications in the use of firearms as well as non-lethal uses of force to include pepper spray, ASP baton, and hand-to-hand mobilization techniques.
  • Submitting maintenance reports with an emphasis on malfunctioning locks, lighting, and fire/safety hazards.
  • Submitting accurate, clear, and concise police reports in a timely manner.
  • Delivering daily deposits/deliveries to the bank and post office when directed.
  • Unlocking and jump-starting vehicles and assisting motorists in any other manner requested.
  • Providing vehicle and foot escorts to the campus citizenry.
  • Serving on committee as assigned.
  • Assuming the duties and responsibilities of the Chief of Police in his/her absence.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

FLSA Non-Exempt

Estimated Hours per Week:
Full Time - 40 hours per week

Salary: $46,000 - $52,000 (based on the College’s salary plan and commensurate with education and relevant work experience).

Beaufort County Community College serves a 2,100 square mile service region comprised of four counties (Beaufort, Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington) in coastal North Carolina.
