Position: Probation Officer Trainee (Juvenile

The Probation Officer Trainee position is an entry‑level role that involves orientation and one year of training under close supervision. The trainee will be assigned to the Fremont and Blair offices and will acquire experience in investigatory and supervisory activities related to juvenile offenders.

Job Duties
  • Become familiar with pre‑sentence and pre‑disposition investigations for juvenile offenders, including conducting intake and assessment interviews with offenders, families, and others.
  • Provide sentencing recommendations to the court based on case findings and attend court proceedings to present information verbally and in writing.
  • Perform risk assessments to determine appropriate supervision level, recommend incentives or sanctions, and monitor drug screens.
  • Conduct client probation meetings, providing counseling, completing case reports, and managing a caseload. This includes conducting assessments or follow‑ups, offering direction to meet court requirements, and referring clients to community resources such as food, shelter, and employment.
  • Prepare violation reports, compliance reports, and perform record checks. Update client information in appropriate systems and submit court updates as required.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.
  • Requirements / Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in social services, criminal justice, or a directly related field. Candidates who receive their degree within 120 days of application will be given priority.
    • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.
    • Knowledge of criminal justice laws, court procedures, interview and assessment practices, crisis intervention techniques, and modern office procedures.
    • Skill in conducting home visits, interviewing probationers, tracking locations, applying intervention policies, making evidence‑based decisions, and maintaining professional composure in challenging situations.
    • Proficiency with computers and related software applications.
    • Required to meet physical demands of the job, including light lifting of up to 20 pounds.
