SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of Residential Education with a dotted line to the Bloomfield Campus Assistant Dean of Students, the Assistant Director leads a residential area housing approximately 700 beds, and provides supervision and guidance to a team of professional staff, including full‑time live-on professional staff members and student staff. The Assistant Director serves as a student-centered leader responsible for fostering inclusive residential communities, supporting student success and well‑being, overseeing residential operations, and contributing to a cohesive residential experience across the Montclair and Bloomfield campuses within a dynamic and evolving higher education environment.

The Assistant Director coordinates recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of hall staff, as well as the planning and implementation of programs to foster student leadership development, community building and socialization, and academic success in collaboration with the Residential Education management team. This position manages the student behavior process, personnel and administrative policies, and addresses physical environment concerns. This is a live‑out position that requires both on and off-site emergency contact outside normal office hours, on weekends, breaks and holidays.

This position oversees the day-to-day housing operations at the Bloomfield campus and reports issues or concerns to the Associate Director of Housing Operations and supervisor immediately.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide direct supervision, coaching, support, and professional development for full-time live-in residence life staff, including conducting regular one-on-one and team meetings, managing performance evaluations and goal-setting, and approving schedules, payroll, and time requests.
  • Oversee the daily operations and staffing of assigned residence halls, ensuring alignment with departmental goals, student development best practices, university policies, housing regulations, and emergency protocols.
  • Respond to crisis situations and participates in the managerial on-call rotation, providing leadership, guidance, coordination, and follow-up support in collaboration with campus partners and maintaining appropriate documentation in accordance with university protocols.
  • Collaborate with Residential Education, Housing Operations, Facilities, and campus partners across the Montclair and Bloomfield campuses to support resident safety and well‑being, occupancy management, housing transitions, emergency relocations, maintenance concerns, and residential facility improvements.
  • Support the recruitment, selection, onboarding, training, supervision, and evaluation of professional and student staff, including assisting with the development of training materials, learning outcomes, interview resources, assessment tools, and staff development initiatives.
  • Contribute to the implementation and evaluation of comprehensive staff training programs and recruitment processes, including coordinating logistics, materials, events, speakers, and related resources.
  • Support community development initiatives through residence hall programming, student engagement efforts, thematic and living-learning communities, and collaboration with campus partners on campus-wide events and initiatives.
  • Provide oversight and advisement for student leadership and governance initiatives, including Residence Hall Association and residence hall councils, while fostering student leadership development and community engagement.
  • Serve as a University Hearing Officer for students involved in university and housing policy violations and as an appeal officer within the conduct process.
  • Utilize university systems and housing management platforms to maintain records, monitor student engagement, support operational functions, and utilize data and feedback to inform departmental improvements, training priorities, and student support strategies.
