General

Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the principal and assigned teacher, the educational assistant performs primarily instructional tasks to meet the objectives and criteria of the specific program assignment. Provides instructional assistance to individuals or groups of students in a computer lab; complementing classroom instruction with software applications and computer technology; providing written support and/or conveying information regarding instructional materials. The educational assistant will also supervise the In School Suspension program.

Performs work monitoring the behavior of students assigned to in‑school suspension, administers in‑school suspension programs, enforces established rules and regulations, and reinforces instructional activities as prescribed by the referring teacher. The general classification of an educational assistant may be defined as one who is available in the classroom as a second supervising adult and who works to assist students as defined by the program, performing such duties as reinforcing teacher‑presented lessons and skills, reinforcing concepts previously taught, instruction in English language development, cultural presentations, and other school related functions.

A certified school instructor, administrator, or their designee assigns the educational assistant's duties. The supervising instructor is responsible for the supervision and yearly evaluation of the educational assistant, and for the instruction and supervision of the students in the assistant’s charge.

Qualifications
  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be able to obtain an Educational Assistant License through the New Mexico Public Education Department.
  • Experience in computer operation.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing, lifting, and carrying (up to 50 lbs), reaching, squatting, kneeling, and depending on the position performing CPI restraints as learned in training.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Assist licensed personnel in the school environment including covering classroom when teacher is called away.
  • Provide assistance with individual program materials.
  • Assist licensed personnel with student discipline.
  • Assist in maintaining student involvement in appropriate tasks.
  • Instruct students for the purpose of complementing classroom instruction with a variety of software applications and the use of computer technology.
  • Maintains computer hardware and software applications for the purpose of ensuring availability of instructional materials.
  • Maintains computer lab equipment, work area, and manual and electronic files and records for the purpose of ensuring availability of items; providing written reference; providing a safe learning environment; and/or meeting mandated requirements.
  • Assist with supplementary work for students and supervise independent study in the school environment.
  • Help maintain cohesiveness in the school environment.
  • Display a desire to work with students.
  • Serve as a role model.
  • Work as a member of a team.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Use current technology for instruction and management needs.
  • Comply with state approved Code of Ethics of the education profession and with state and federal regulations.
  • Explain in‑school suspension rules and procedures to students assigned to program. Explain expected conduct and achievement.
  • Check attendance daily and report to attendance clerk.
  • Observe and monitor students' progress and social behavior. Discuss behavior of students with administrators, teachers, school counselor, and parents.
  • Check student work during suspension periods; review student progress; return students' completed work to teacher(s).
  • Monitor and report inappropriate behavior by students to administration.
