Job Description:

The school health assistant assists the public education department licensed school registered nurse with the implementation of the school health program, by providing delegated nursing services in the health room, including but not limited to, health screening, assisting with the administration of medications, basic first aid procedures, maintenance of student health records, maintenance of a clean and orderly health room. The school health assistant may also perform nursing tasks as appropriately delegated by the public education licensed registered nurse for the care of individual students with special needs, including diapering, range of motion exercises, and feeding assistance.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • First aid, CPR, blood borne pathogen training, child abuse reporting training, and any training deemed necessary by supervisors, preferred or obtained within six months of employment.
  • Computer literate with demonstrated skills in word processing, database, and spreadsheets.
  • Health Assistant Licensure with the NM Public Education Department at Level I, must also complete a NM Department of Health training for school health assistants.
  • If previously worked as a School Health Assistant, employee must provide verification by school administrator that a Health Assistant orientation was given and was successfully completed.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

Walking – frequent (buildings, fields)

Lifting – occasionally (supplies, equipment, children) 50‑75 lbs.

Motion Requirements: BACK/TRUNK‑flexion, rotation

Performance Responsibilities
  • All activities of the health assistant are under the direction and supervision of a licensed Public Education licensed registered nurse and the district nursing supervisor and per the New Mexico Nurse Practice Act.
  • Performs health office assignments with precedence over other tasks or activities.
  • Administer minor first aid to the sick and injured as trained and directed by the nurse and according to the School Health Manual Emergency Guidelines.
  • Provides personal hygiene assistance to students.
  • Contacts the public education department nurse or parent/caregiver for direction in case of illness or injury other than minor first aid, if the nurse cannot be reached.
  • Administers CPR when necessary. Activates Emergency Medical Services if necessary.
  • Assists and conducts with routine vision, hearing, height weight or other nurse directed screenings at any district school site.
  • Performs and records screening results on student records as designated by the nurse.
  • Notifies the nurse of screening failures according to directions and guidelines of the nurse.
  • Maintains and uses computer skills of word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Assists to collect, maintain, distribute, and review health information data as requested by the school nurse and supervisor.
  • Reviews immunization records to determine compliance with NMDOH requirements and assists the nurse to notify parents/guardian of school requirements through procedures directed by the nursing staff.
