Application Engineer

Responsibilities

• Responsible for processing, tool layouts, and programming of CNC multi-axis machines. Proposals: create proposals for new parts from customer print and indicate appropriate machine tool, material, cycle time/parts per hour, tooling cost, subsequent operations, and outside services needed.
• Documentation, tool layout, and offset print: create a tool layout sheet specifying all tooling and hardware needed to set up a specific job in a specific machine tool; identify the Autocrib inventory number for perishable tooling so operators can locate the appropriate cutting tool. Create color-coded offset print to communicate to the machine operator what tool affects what geometry on the piece, so the operator can make appropriate adjustments to keep the part within specification.
  
  Maintain and update layouts and offset prints.
• CNC programming and process engineering: create a machining process, including sequence of operations; select cutting tools; determine appropriate machining processes to achieve required results (e.g., drill, ream, bore, burnish, broach, single point thread, tap, roll thread, polygon turn, transmit mill, polar interpolation, etc.); determine machining parameters (speeds, feeds, and DOC) based on workpiece material, cutting tool material, and cutting tool geometry.
  
  Create CNC programs using Partmaker or Espirit CAD CAM software for turning centers, Swiss-type turning centers, and multispindle machines; support manufacturers index and brands listed; work with Siemens 840D, Fanuc, Okuma OSP, and Mitsubishi controls. Set up and provide all CNC programs for the listed machines. Set up part files in the Zoller tool presetter for all Index and Star ST38 processes.
• Train personnel on machine setup, operation, and repair for all Index and CNC department machinery; monitor and improve cycle time and process capability on all CNC machines.
• Perform machine setups when the department is behind or when the setup person is absent; set up and prove out new processes and more complex piece parts.
• Corrective action and problem solving: attend corrective action meetings with quality control to provide technical solutions to process inefficiencies and quality concerns.
• Troubleshoot and repair machinery: seek advice from the machine manufacturer when unable to resolve issues; knowledge of Siemens Step 7 PLC program required to track down malfunctions within the machine’s logic system; locate and secure economical replacement components; coordinate repair and remanufacture of mechanical and electronic machine components.
• Manufacture, repair, and replace parts for machine tools.

• At least 3-5 years of machine programming experience
• Knowledge of machining, processing, and CNC machines
• Knowledge of blueprint reading, GDT, inspection equipment, and tooling
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
