A Freight Brokerage Manager is responsible for overseeing the freight brokerage operations. This role involves managing carrier relationships, negotiating rates, ensuring compliance with regulations, and leading a team of freight brokers/logistics coordinators. The manager ensures smooth transportation of goods while maximizing profitability and customer satisfaction.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Oversee operations team to ensure proper workload is managed so team is working as a team and not overloading specific/individual team members
- Proactive and strategic process and people leadership for the planning and execution of all customer shipments
- Provide performance guidance and leadership to the transportation operations team
- Build, mentor and lead a high-performing transportation and logistics team, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
- Promote a collaborative work environment and champion diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the team
- Lead large, complex transportation planning, monitoring internal and external events, ensuring satisfactory performance and profitability and supervising day-to-day operations and employees
Duties/Responsibilities
- Operational Management: Oversee daily freight brokerage operations, including load booking, carrier assignments, on-time deliveries, rate discrepancies, and any back office issues
- Carrier Relations: Establish and maintain strong relationships with carriers to secure competitive rates and ensure service reliability
- Customer Service: Work with shippers to understand their transportation needs, offer solutions, and resolve issues efficiently
- Rate Negotiation: Negotiate pricing and contracts with carriers and customers to maintain profitability while ensuring competitive market rates
- Compliance & Documentation: Ensure all brokerage activities comply with federal and state transportation regulations (FMCSA, DOT) and maintain accurate records
- Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor freight brokers, dispatchers, and sales teams fostering a high-performance culture
- Technology & Reporting: Utilize transportation management systems (TMS) to track shipments, analyze performance, and improve operational efficiency
- Continuous Improvement: Implement lean practices and automation to improve supply chain efficiency and accuracy
- Standard Operating Procedures: Document SOPs for all top tiered customers and ensure updates are completed as needed to aid in training and ongoing performance improvement
- Business Reviews: Create documentation to support customer and carrier business reviews and articulate metrics and performance improvement, along with best-in-class processes and technology utilization
- Conduct: Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to Wicker Park Logistics’ Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
- Leadership & Mentoring: Work closely with operations staff to identify, hire, train, develop and grow key employees and resources, and ensure successful customer deliverables
Qualifications & Skills
- 5+ years of proven experience in freight brokerage, logistics, or transportation management
- Strong knowledge of freight market trends, carrier networks, and regulatory requirements
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- In-depth knowledge of transportation networks, logistics best practices, and carrier management
- Strong financial acumen with the ability to manage budgets, negotiate contracts, and drive cost reductions
