The Office of Residential Life (ORL) at Illinois Wesleyan University invites applications for the position of Area Director. ORL is a dynamic department dedicated to providing an exceptional residential experience that fosters student growth, engagement, and success.

As essential personnel on a residential campus, Area Directors promote the development of students' leadership, decision‑making, conflict resolution, fiscal management, problem‑solving, and self‑discipline skills. Serving as live‑in professional staff members, Area Directors develop and implement procedures that support and enhance student safety during both acute and ongoing crises.

The Area Director is responsible for supervising residence hall staff across multiple residence halls and providing leadership for the overall operation of their assigned communities. This includes overseeing programming and activities, supporting student development, managing community standards, and creating an inclusive and engaging residential environment that contributes to student success.

This a full time, residential, benefits‑eligible position. Generous benefits include health, retirement, considerable time off and access to multiple tuition programs for employees and dependents.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily operations of residential communities; communicate with campus constituents; coordinate residential curricular programming; execute emergency response procedures; hire, train, supervise and provide feedback to approximately 15 student staff members; perform facility management including damage hall reports, billing, and oversight of service request system; execute building opening and closing procedures. Perform ORL central office responsibilities; complete committee work related to student staff training, recruitment, selection and recognition;

    attend and lead meetings; enforce policies; assist with new student orientation, including pre‑orientation, international student orientation and transfer student orientation.

    Adjudicate violations of the Student Code of Conduct; meet with students; determine sanctioning parameters and follow up to ensure completion; complete documentation in Guardian software. Counsel residents informally, and provide appropriate resources and referrals; meet with students both virtually and in person; maintain manager notes in Guardian software.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s required, master’s degree preferred; such areas as Higher Education Administration, Student Development, Counseling.
  • Preferred experience includes supervision, facility management, advising, and program development.
  • Ability to understand and apply student development and learning outcome theories.
  • Understanding of the value of the residential living experience to the overall success of undergraduate students.
  • Participation in on‑call duty rotation, respond to student crises.
  • Physical/environmental demands:
    Ability to walk up and down stairs.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Annualized salary for 12 months is $35,568.
