McLean County Government is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Engineering Technician I to join our Highway Department. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys both field and office work, thrives in a hands‑on environment, and is excited to support important infrastructure projects across the county.
Position OverviewThe Engineering Technician I performs a variety of technical engineering duties including computerized drafting, field surveying, construction inspection, materials testing, and data collection. Work is completed with independence and accuracy in accordance with IDOT standards, engineering best practices, and county policies.
Key Responsibilities- Create computerized drafting and preliminary designs for maintenance and construction projects.
- Research project documents, process survey data in CADD software, and produce cross‑sections, plan/profile sheets, drainage plans, and cost estimates.
- Serve as survey crew member or chief; operate survey equipment, record field notes, and assist with various surveying tasks.
- Conduct inspections of county/township roads, subdivision streets, bridges, and contract construction work.
- Oversee and coordinate contract paving projects; collect material samples and perform density and concrete tests.
- Support GIS data creation and maintenance; assist engineers and project managers with various technical tasks.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office and familiarity with engineering‑related software.
- Skill in surveying, drafting, and using technical equipment related to roadway and bridge construction.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, blueprints, and specifications.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with contractors, colleagues, and township officials.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and on uneven terrain.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform tasks requiring balance, climbing, kneeling, standing, and walking.

- Completion of one (1) year of Computer‑Aided Drafting training OR a degree from a 2‑year Construction or Engineering Technology program.
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License.
This role includes both office and field work. Fieldwork may involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, fumes, rough terrain, and occasional interactions with upset residents. Proper safety equipment is required and provided.
