General SummaryA Licensed Practical Nurse provides skilled, technical nursing care to patients according to a plan of care established by a Registered Nurse.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities- Collects data on assigned patients as directed by the unit-based Performance Standards, Protocols and Standards of Care.
- Implements a plan of care developed by a Registered Professional Nurse.
- Assists the APP in evaluation of effectiveness of care given via Protocols and Standards of Care.
- Demonstrates competency in selected psychomotor skills as allowed within the LPN scope if practice.
- Assists the patient/family in learning appropriate self‑care techniques as directed by the APP, Teaching Protocols and the established Standard of Care.
- Performs accurate documentation duties on the nursing unit and in patient records as directed by unit-based Performance Standards, forms and guidelines.
- Demonstrates awareness of and sensitivity to patient and family rights, as identified by the hospital.
- Functions with an awareness and application of safety issues as identified by the hospital/director of nursing structure standards.
- Demonstrates an understanding of appropriate emergency responses and the ability to remain calm in select situations.
- Assumes responsibility for knowledge of and adherence to approved Structure and Process Standards for select patient population.
- Demonstrates an awareness of and assumes self responsibility for nursing practice which falls within the prescribed scope of practice for LPN’s as defined in this state’s Nurse Practice Act.
- Participates in patient care conferences, in‑services programs, and continuing education activities to meet institutional requirements.
- Seeks guidance and validation of knowledge base, skill level, and decision making as necessary, especially in areas of question, from assigned APP.
- Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care/unit functions and actively supports risk management activities.
- Participates in development and attainment of self, unit, and nursing department goals/ objectives.
- Participates in unit and nursing departments Standards Development and Quality Improvement activities.
- Communicates all pertinent information, including finding, problems, concerns, or ideas to assigned APP, utilizing appropriate lines of authority, in a timely and effective manner.
- Promotes a constructive/positive atmosphere within the work area by demonstrating the ability to cooperate with and assist fellow health team members as well as patients and their families.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Visual acuity to observe patient assessment data and use manual/automated documentation tools.
- Auditory acuity to hear patient verbal communication and gather data using auscultatory skills.
- Manual dexterity of hands and feet to ambulate 8‑12 hours per shift.
- Physical strength to perform CPR (bed/floor), lift/push/pull 60–300 pounds. Perform constant walking, twisting, turning, and stretching maneuvers in patient care and use of patient care equipment.
- Keen mental faculties to perform assessment and decision making skills in the management of acutely ill patients.
- Communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information in person and by telephone.
- Emotional stability conductive to dealing with a high stress level for 8‑12 hours at a time associated with caring for acute patients fast paced physical activity, rapidly changing patient conditions, emotional demands of maintaining effective working relationships with peers, managers, physicians, and other health care workers.
- Strength to perform the following lifting tasks:
- Floor to waist - 40 pounds
- 14” to waist - 50 pounds
- Waist to shoulder - 20 pounds
- Shoulder to overhead - 10 pounds
- Carry 40 pounds for 30 feet
- Push 40 pounds/force for 30 feet
- Pull 40 pounds/force for 10 feet
Reports to the Office Manager &/or respective Provider.
