Casualty Underwriter

A specialty E&S carrier is seeking an experienced Non‑Admitted Excess Casualty Underwriter to join its Chicago underwriting team. This role focuses on small and middle‑market risks across construction, real estate, manufacturing, products liability, and other high‑hazard classes. The ideal candidate brings strong technical underwriting skills, disciplined risk selection, and established wholesale broker relationships.

• Underwrite non‑admitted excess casualty submissions, including supported and unsupported layers.
• Evaluate risk quality, loss history, exposure profile, and attachment strategy.
• Determine pricing, terms, and conditions consistent with underwriting guidelines.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with wholesale brokers throughout Chicago and the Midwest.
• Manage a growing book with attention to profitability, documentation, and compliance.
• Collaborate with actuarial, claims, and leadership to support portfolio performance.
• Contribute to underwriting appetite refinement and market strategy.

• 5+ years of experience underwriting E&S excess casualty.
• Strong understanding of surplus lines, non‑admitted filings, and high‑hazard classes.
• Experience underwriting small and middle‑market risks with appropriate attachment points.
• Established wholesale broker relationships
• Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
• Familiarity with E&S underwriting systems, rating methodologies, and workflow processes.
• Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, risk management, or related field.

Pay starting at 150k based on experience
