Job SummaryAn experienced technician who performs Quality Audits on completed Locating Tickets and is responsible for a variety of tasks related to utility protection for a variety of utility clients. The Watch and Protect technician will oversee contractors digging on and around utility facilities, and monitor excavation to help prevent damage to critical facilities.
Responsibilities- Perform Quality Audits of on-site locating tickets, focusing on accuracy and marking standards.
- On-site audits include inspection of locate marks and marking standards for accuracy, E-Sketch documentation, billing and status codes, screen capture and photo documentation review, and scope of the tickets work area completed.
- Communicate any serious audit concerns to the supervisor immediately and address them on-site.
- Watch & Protect: compare real-world conditions to record documentation to identify errors and omissions; verify location of client facilities within specified dig extents; protect client facilities within a given area as directed by the client.
- Understand contractor means and methods for subsurface installations; monitor and provide surveillance of critical infrastructure where excavations are taking place or will take place.
- Contact excavators and schedule monitoring of critical excavations; monitor excavations near critical infrastructure to prevent damage to client facilities.
- Locate and mark underground facilities using industry tools, standards and methods, including locating devices and utility maps.
- Perform ticket audits to ensure locators correctly locate facilities and follow proper marking procedures.
- Complete required background checks and pass a DOT drug test as a condition of employment.
- All employees are assigned proper technology and work vehicles to perform duties.
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver’s license
- 2 years of experience in the locating industry
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to read and interpret prints at a high level
- Multiple years locating and pipeline technician experience
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work with citizens, company and contractor representatives, and customers
- Good organizational skills to handle varied tasks
- Knowledge of safe worksite practices
- Experience with construction and installation of below-grade infrastructure
- Experience with utility standard designs and complex urban underground utility infrastructure
- Experience serving as firm/client liaison
- Experience reviewing design drawings and using locating equipment
- Capable of moving about on construction sites, public streets and parkways
- Capable of lifting up to 50/75 lbs
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel or sit for extended periods
- Hand-eye coordination to operate computers and measurement, locating and testing instruments

- Work safely outside in all weather conditions year-round
- Occasionally work in excavation areas and roadways
