Building Maintenance, Maintenance Worker
This is supervisory level work performed in the completion of complex maintenance work performed on municipal streets and sewers. Work involves responsibility for organizing and directing a maintenance crew for performing work related to the installation of modifications in, and the repair and maintenance of sewer system components and the municipal street system. Assignments emphasize the performance of skilled work and the supervision of crew maintenance men to assure the correct completion of assigned tasks.
Duties also include the preparation of basic work reports. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of the street and sewer Supervisor and is subject to review through periodic, incidental inspections of jobs upon completion, through report preparation, and the achievement of desired results.

- Supervises heavy operators, utility worker, truck drivers, and laborers assigned to complete street and sewer maintenance work; participates in all job phases and performs the more difficult repair tasks.
- Supervises work and digs out concrete, gas and water line ditches; fills ditches to grade and compacts material to correct level; performs pavement repair and construction work; repairs and constructs sidewalks; constructs forms, places and finishes new concrete; places and levels topsoil, plants grass and places sod.
- Supervises asphalt pavement work; applies hot asphalt in street patching; barricades work areas and opens streets to traffic when surfaces are cured.
- Installs new storm water inlets; replaces cracked or broken sewer tiles; rebuilds manholes and inlet boxes; readjusts inlet caps or heads; directs and participates in sewer inspections.
- Supervises cleaning of inlets, removal of leaves, and grass; directs the hauling of trash to city land fill and dump; supervises and participates in the sweeping and cleaning up of islands and medians.
- Directs and participates in snow removal work; shovels snow, sweeps crosswalks; spreads sand and salt on streets.
- Performs all general duties listed in Position #3015 Truck Driver, Public Service Department, Street and Sewer Division.
- Prepares basic work reports.
- Performs related work as required.
Graduation from standard high school or vocational/technical school; considerable experience with Public Works maintenance in the Street and Sewer division; or any equivalent combination of training and experience to provide the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
- Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in general street and sewer maintenance and repair work.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and of the safety precautions necessary in the performance of general maintenance work.
- Considerable knowledge of the operating standards of light and heavy trucks and power equipment.
- Ability to perform work independently under limited technical supervision.
- Ability to plan and organize the completion of maintenance work with skilled and semi-skilled maintenance crews and individuals.
- Ability to prepare standard work reports.
- Ability to deal with the public in difficult and general work situations.
- Ability to understand and follow general oral and written instructions.
- Skill in use, care, and demonstration of general and specialized tools, manual and power maintenance tools, and light automotive equipment.
Possession and maintenance of a valid Illinois Class B Commercial Drivers License.
