Job Summary

The Forensic Assessment Specialist is responsible for conducting comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments for individuals referred by the Lake County Common Pleas Courts prior to sentencing. This role involves collaborating with court personnel to deliver thorough mental health and substance use evaluations, identifying clients’ strengths and needs, and recommending appropriate levels of care. The Forensic Assessment Specialist facilitates referrals to treatment providers, maintains accurate documentation, and upholds professional ethical standards.

Additionally, the position requires effective communication and rapport‑building with clients, families, and stakeholders to ensure a supportive and collaborative environment.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs biopsychosocial assessments for individuals referred by the Lake County Common Pleas Courts prior to sentencing, utilizing the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) multidimensional assessment to gather information on emotional, behavioral, cognitive, social, and physical conditions.
  • Works collaboratively with the court personnel, probation officers, and other stakeholders to provide comprehensive mental health and substance use assessments.
  • Assesses clients’ strengths and needs, recommending appropriate levels of care based on ASAM’s Clinical Protocols for Level of Care.
  • Provides recommendations for the courts and facilitates the intake, referral, assessment, and admission processes to various Lake County treatment providers.
  • Offers consultation to the courts upon request regarding individual assessments and recommendations.
  • Completes client charting and required documentation in a timely, professional, and accurate manner, adhering to agency policies and procedures.
  • Upholds professional ethics and client confidentiality, including knowledge of client rights and grievance procedures.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge and adherence to office policies and procedures.
  • Consults with supervisors as needed for case reviews, differential diagnosis, and guidance.
  • Establishes a good rapport with all stakeholders, including the public, clients, families, and staff, while maintaining a positive public relations image.
  • Works well with other staff and community stakeholders in a professional and team-oriented approach.
  • Maintains up-to-date licensure and certification in accordance with professional requirements.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a human services field is required; a Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • Valid licensure as an LPCC or LISW is required. (Condition of employment)
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in behavioral health, including assessment and referral processes.
  • Previous experience with the criminal justice system or forensic settings is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of mental illness, substance use disorders, family illness models, community resources, and treatment modalities.
  • Proficient in computer literacy, with the ability to utilize relevant software and systems.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Minimum of 3 years in a personal recovery program, if applicable.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and off‑site as scheduled.

Background Check and Alcohol and Drug Screen required.

Pay: $60,000 – $70,000 per year
