Wylie House Museum advances the academic mission of Indiana University by engaging visitors in immersive, research-driven explorations of the past. Built in 1835 as the home of IU’s first president, Andrew Wylie, the historic residence now operates as a unit of IU Libraries. The museum collects, preserves, interprets, and provides access to the Wylie family home, its archival materials, and its nineteenth-century artifact collections.

As one of the few academic historic house museums in the country, Wylie House is both a public cultural resource and an active learning environment for university courses, researchers, and students seeking hands‑on professional experience.

Department Specific Responsibilities
  • Coordinate building operations, safety, accessibility, general maintenance, and visitor services.
  • Collect and analyze operational and visitor data; prepare reports and manage supplies and work orders.
  • Manage general communications, calendars, website content, and promotional communications.
  • Coordinate hiring, scheduling, and training of student employees and volunteers.
  • Support administrative activities, records management, and documentation needs.
  • Assist with reference‑research requests, digitization, and collections care.
  • Support educational programs, tours, outreach initiatives, and special events.
  • Serve as the primary professional staff member on duty during Saturday museum operations.
General Responsibilities
  • Handles and monitors library materials, including re‑shelving, processing new material, restocking, and ensuring that all materials can be located quickly and easily. Evaluates condition of library materials and may perform repair and preservation of library materials, as needed.
  • Assists faculty, students, and other patrons by answering phones and handling library‑related issues, resolving non‑routine problems related to library activities.
  • Monitors library systems. Creates and updates basic records, maintains automated records, reviewing for completeness and accuracy.
  • Collects and collates data, compiles statistics, uses compiled information to prepare unit reports.
  • May assist with cataloging new items, performing audits of outstanding items, and/or inter‑library loan materials processing.
  • May oversee library department desk and provide training and direction for students employees working the front desk.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

Education

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
Work Experience

Required

  • 4 years library experience.

Preferred

  • Supervision experience.
  • Experience in visitor or public services.
  • Familiarity with museum, archives, or collections activities.
