STUDENT LEGAL SERVICES (BL‑SLEG‑IUBLA)

The Office of Student Legal Services (SLEG) provides legal advice and services to the students of Indiana University Bloomington. It handles a range of legal matters, including prosecuting and defending lawsuits and administrative proceedings involving IU students, and offers day‑to‑day advice on criminal matters, immigration, contract review, and financial issues. Support staff must maintain professionalism and confidentiality.

Responsibilities
  • Provide support to a team of 5 attorneys, 15‑25 law student interns, office managers, and students requiring legal assistance.
  • Handle reception duties, answer phones, verify eligibility, conflicts of interest, and determine if a request falls within SLS’s scope.
  • Refer ineligible requests to appropriate campus partners, private attorneys, or other agencies; draft and edit legal correspondence, contracts, and reports.
  • Maintain calendars, schedule appointments, and process mail while coordinating with appropriate staff.
  • Manage electronic files, oversee communications with constituencies, and serve as the first departmental contact and primary receptionist.
  • Process matters for opening and closing, record court appearances, format and send letters, memos, faxes, and emails, and update files and databases accurately.
  • Assist the Office Manager with logging, distributing, and processing legal fee payments and maintaining payment logs.
  • Orient and guide new law student interns on office policies and procedures; create and update intern schedules.
  • Maintain appointment as a Notary Public in the State of Indiana.
General Responsibilities
  • Support daily operations, front‑desk duties, phone and email handling, and mail delivery.
  • Serve as liaison to campus partners for cross‑departmental student support initiatives.
  • Assist student participants, stakeholders, faculty, and staff; provide resources, documentation, and reports.
  • Schedule student appointments and give directions and support to visitors.
  • Assist with scheduling, training, gathering student feedback, and preparing presentations or materials.
  • Order or create promotional materials for student organizations or departmental needs.
  • Conduct benchmarking research on student support initiatives and design surveys to gauge satisfaction and effectiveness.
  • Provide guidance to other Student Support Coordinators.
Education
  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent (e.g., HSED or GED).
  • Preferred: Associate’s degree in office management or related field.
Work Experience
  • 4 years in an office environment, higher education, or related field.
Licenses and Certificates
  • Notary Public in the State of Indiana.

Location and Schedule

Indiana University Bloomington – In‑person position.

Hourly rate: $23.31 per hour.

Standard hours:
Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
