JACOBS SCHOOL OF MUSIC (BL-MUS-IUBLA) Department-specific Responsibilities
- Leads a team of 30 to 60 student workers who support backstage and modest front-of-house operations for nearly 900 music performances per year, across 3 routine recital venues (Auer Hall, Ford-Crawford Hall, and Recital Hall) and a few other occasional on-campus locations.
- Manages the hiring, training, scheduling, and improvement of the student recital setups team.
- Trains and supervises student stage crews, faculty, and staff on the proper operation of audio, video, lighting equipment in the recital venues.
- Coordinates between the individuals and offices for Scheduling, Programs, Piano Technology, Audio, Live Stream, Classroom Technology, and any other supporting teams for the planning and delivery of performances in the recital venues.
- Establishes and refines norms on how to prepare and setup for various range of routine performances, such as a solo piano recital, lecture recital, string quartet concert, etc.
- Supports emergency and contingent planning for the recital venues.
- Monitors the equipment of the recital venues to ensure that items are serviced, tested, or replaced in keeping with the appropriate norms. In coordination with the audio department, performing basic maintenance as needed on audio equipment.
- Provides to the Associate Dean for Artistic Operations daily bullet-point reports on the prior day's events.
- In coordination with the Manager of Audio, provides audio support as needed for events including but not limited to, recitals, conferences and symposia, classes, and meetings.
- Sets up, operates, and troubleshoots in-house PA and recording systems, including wireless microphones, mixing consoles, stage monitors, and associated equipment.
- Provide technical guidance as required to ensure performance needs are met.
- Reports to the Associate Dean for Artistic Operations and may be assigned other tasks for broad efforts of the Jacobs School Artistic Operations Team.
- Monitors productions and signals, determines proper operation of broadcast quality equipment, provides troubleshooting guidance, and corrects basic and complex issues involving sound quality, production playback, and file transfer.
- Manages, designs, plans, installs, operates, and maintains video production facilities, tape and server recording and editing equipment, and lighting and stage equipment, including digital cameras, switchers, graphics, routing, recording, playback, encoding, embedding, compression, and multiplexing with multiple layers of audio.
- Assesses equipment needs for productions, procures necessary materials, and configures installation to ensure consistent operations during production.
- Designs and implements preventive maintenance schedules and operating procedures to maintain equipment.
- Tests, adjusts, and evaluates installed systems and approves post-production media for technical quality for release to other broadcasters regularly.
- May train Broadcast Technicians and/or Audio/Video Technicians on procedures and production equipment operations.
