About the Position

Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and Indiana University Health Medical Group are recruiting a Division Chief for General Surgery. The Division Chief will provide strategic and operational leadership across the full range of division service areas, including the tripartite missions of the academic institution: clinical and administrative service, education, and research.

Division Overview

The Division supports 21 faculty members, 11 advanced practice providers, and 7 hospitals in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. In 2025 it saw over 7,800 new patients and performed more than 6,600 surgeries, offering colon & rectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, bariatric surgery, hernia surgery, and general surgery. The division is home to a nationally recognized Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery program known for its excellence in outcomes, innovation, and adherence to national quality standards.

Training

and Education

It supports advanced surgical training through the Fellowship Council‑accredited Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgery/Bariatric Surgery fellowship, offering one fellowship position annually. The division also plays a key role in surgical education, supporting one of the nation’s largest general surgery residency programs that trains approximately 58 residents, providing extensive clinical exposure, mentorship, and multidisciplinary learning across multiple service lines.

They should have a record of achievement in clinical work, education, research, and administration; be collaborative, relationship‑oriented, and experienced at uniting disciplines across academic and clinical environments to drive program growth and impact regionally and nationally. The Division Chief must bring a forward‑looking perspective on the future of general surgery, emphasize growth, expansion, thoughtful investment, and partnership, and inspire others to drive continuous improvement in patient care, teaching, and research.

Expectations & Responsibilities

The Division Chief is expected to establish annual academic priorities, mentor faculty, conduct comprehensive annual faculty reviews, and actively participate in graduate medical education. They will strategically reorganize care delivery across the Indianapolis metropolitan region and beyond, oversee research initiatives, ensure strong financial performance, and manage a substantial operating budget and annual discretionary funds. Additional responsibilities include preparing and presenting financial and operational performance reports and fostering effective collaboration with all functional areas across the Department of Surgery, IU Health Medical Group, affiliated hospitals, and partner physician organizations.
