Overview

Hilltop Garden and Nature Center is a 5 acre public garden site located within the Indiana University campus. Hilltop's mission is to serve as an educational and recreational resource for youth gardening, Indiana University students and staff, and the surrounding community to learn about gardening and to connect with nature. The Junior Master Gardener (JMG) program is an international youth gardening program of the university cooperative Extension network.

JMG engages children in novel, hands-on group and individual learning experiences that provide a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment, and cultivate the mind. Hilltop Garden and Nature Center is seeking an individual to serve as the Junior Master Gardener program instructor.

Responsibilities
  • Engages students ages 9-13 in the Junior Master Gardener Curriculum and provide guidance as the students plan and maintain their own garden plot.
  • Responsible for instilling the Junior Master Gardener mission in students and providing the opportunity for each child to complete the necessary requirements to become a certified Junior Master Gardener using the Junior Master Gardener Curriculum.
  • Plans and leads 2 weekly, 90 minute JMG Program sessions for children ages 9-13.
  • Develops and coordinates community service opportunities for JMG participants.
  • Assists with garden maintenance.
  • Provides a safe learning environment.
  • Assists with organizing and distributing tasks to program volunteers.
  • Assists with Hilltop events and programs.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in Environmental Education, Elementary or Early Childhood Education, Environmental and Sustainability Sciences, Environmental Management, Youth Development, Recreation Therapy, Parks, Recreation and the Outdoors, or Public Health)
Work Experience
  • Experience teaching children (formal or non-formal)
Licenses and Certificates
  • Preferred:
    First Aid/CPR certification
Skills
  • Gardening experience
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Energetic and creative
  • A willingness and enthusiasm to help children from a wide variety of backgrounds learn basic gardening skills, with a focus on organic and sustainable gardening methods
  • Ability to work independently in the garden, problem solve and make decisions quickly
  • Musical, theatrical, and arts and crafts experience
Schedule & Location

February 16th - October 17th
8-12 hours per week
Available Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings are a must.
Bloomington, Indiana
This is an in-person position
