Department InformationThe Service‑Learning Program (SLP) supports curricular service‑partnerships between instructors and varied community entities, including non‑profits, local and state governments, and small and large businesses. Instructors on the IU Bloomington Campus teach over 300 service‑learning courses annually, partnering with over 100 community partners in the Bloomington‑Monroe County area. Over 3000 students annually complete these classes, providing service in their community that is integral to their academic coursework.
Our community partners receive a Community Engaged Learning (CEL) experience for the student while receiving support for their work. The SLP is located within Indiana University Bloomington's Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL).
- Assess community need for curricular community engaged learning and, with the SLP Director, identify fitting matches with IUB instructors and courses.
- Consult with community agencies that are seeking service‑learning partnerships.
- Assist with the ongoing assessment and improvement of service‑learning partnerships, with an emphasis on the community partners' perspective.
- Coordinate and convene a community of practice made up of the SLP's current and prospective community partners.
- Consult with instructors and campus programs on matters related to service‑learning and community engagement projects.
- Provide instructional support to instructors as necessary.
- Engage in outreach to IU‑Bloomington departments, community partner agencies, and external constituencies (i.e., potential community partners, professional organizations) as appropriate.
- At the direction of the Advocates for Community Engagement (ACE) Coordinator, mentor and train ACEs. ACEs are Cox Engagement Scholars, IU undergraduate students who are placed in local agencies to support curricular community engaged learning partnerships.
- Serve on committees and advisory boards within and beyond IU.
- Keep current with the professional development literature and discourse in area of expertise.
- Participate in local and national conversations about theory and practice in areas related to curricular community engaged learning, service‑learning, community engagement.
- Contribute to goal‑setting and program assessment within CITL, as well as to other initiatives as directed to support CITL goals. Participate on CITL teams effectively to accomplish these tasks.
- Develop and enact methods for learning about community need that can be addressed by curricular community engaged learning.
- Maintain meaningful, respectful relationships with community stakeholders.
- Conduct site visits with ACE agency community partners and other regular partners.
- Work with SLP Director and ACE Coordinator to evaluate current and select new ACE agency community partners.
- Refine and maintain partnership tracking system for courses, instructors, community partners, and community partner needs.
- Develop and facilitate community listening and other events for community partners, as needed, developing these programs from individual events to more advanced transformative events/projects when possible and appropriate.
- Research and identify development opportunities for community partners.
- Develop workshops and presentations to train ACEs on partnership creation, agency needs assessment, and other topics as requested.
- Serve as liaison to key stakeholders in public and private sectors on partnership opportunities advancing institutional initiatives.
- Initiate and maintain frequent interactions with relevant partners ensuring strong collaborative relationships and focus.
- Develop knowledge of issues and needs of initiatives, programs, and partners to make appropriate connections with university and external resources.
- Serve as a community resource facilitating programs, providing technical assistance, and ensuring communication to optimize project outcomes.
