The Department of Biology is part of The College of Arts + Sciences, the oldest and largest academic division of Indiana University. We are committed to broadening participation and expanding access to STEM fields. The Department of Biology is a large, unified department with strong undergraduate degrees, nationally ranked graduate programs, world‑class research spanning the breadth of biological questions and experimental systems, and a passion for science outreach.
The Department of Biology's premier outreach programs — The Jim Holland Summer Enrichment Program (SEP), Summer Science Research Program (SSRP), and Research Initiative in STEM Education (RISE) — provide high‑achieving high school students with engaging opportunities to explore a wide range of scientific disciplines, from microbiology to plant biology. We are seeking counselors for each program.
Department‑Specific Responsibilities- Participates in student check‑in and orientation.
- Interacts with the students and serves as a positive role model. Adheres to program policies, rules, regulations, and procedures. Distributes welcome packets and associated program items.
- Escorts students to/from all activities.
- Supervises student participants during meals, free time, special events, evening activities, and overnight. Plans, prepares, and leads social and recreational activities.
- Models and reinforces positive, respectful behavior at all times.
- Responds appropriately to safety and behavior issues and addresses concerns to the Head Counselor and/or Program Director.
- Manages curfew expectations.
- Required: Bachelor's degree in any field.
- Preferred: Bachelor's degree in education, natural sciences, or a related field.
- Preferred: Background and/or experience with school environments, educating students in a science field.
- Preferred: Previous experience working with science outreach programs and students that have historically faced limited access to STEM opportunities is highly desirable.
- CPR Certified
- High level of responsibility, punctuality, and accountability.
- Ability to complete tasks in a productive and proactive manner.
Free room and board and $600 per week, per program.
Work hours are the dates of each program. A single application is good for all three programs. Counselors must not have any other commitments during the scheduled dates of programs to which you are assigned unless approved by the Program Director in advance. If chosen, you must also attend a counselor orientation one day prior to the start of the program(s).
