The Department of Biology is a large, unified department with strong undergraduate degrees, nationally ranked graduate programs, world‑class research spanning the breadth of biological questions and experimental systems, and a passion for science outreach.

Department‑Specific Responsibilities
  • Attends all program activities.
  • Coordinates additional educational activities and is available to perform other duties as assigned.
  • Assists IU Professors/Lecturers with lab preparations and cleanup, introductions, and with academic activities as needed.
  • Review and evaluates student lab journals, providing constructive feedback to help participants learn to communicate scientifically.
  • Evaluates program success by assisting with student evaluations and completing a program evaluation.
  • Models and reinforces good behavior and responds effectively to safety and conduct concerns, and communicates issues to the Program Director as needed.
  • Escorts students to/from all activities.
  • Interacts with the students and serves as a positive role model.
  • Adheres to program policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

Education

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in education, natural sciences, or related field
Work Experience

Preferred

  • Background and/or experience with school environments, educating students in a science field
  • Previous experience working with science outreach programs and students that have historically faced limited access to STEM opportunities is highly desirable
Skills

Required

  • High level of responsibility, punctuality, and accountability
  • Ability to complete tasks in a productive and proactive manner
  • Ability to actively engage in academic activities with students, address questions or concerns, and clarify STEM content as needed.
  • Ability to supervise groups of students during labs, lectures, and field trips

Ability to move around campus and/or the Bloomington community in the summer. Teachers must be accessible during lecture and lab activities since the primary goal is to interact with your subset of students and ensure they comprehend activities and key takeaways. The person in this position must be available to work for the entire program from staff training to move‑out day.

Applicants must not have anything conflicting for the entirety of the program unless otherwise authorized.

Letters of recommendation will be required at a later stage of the interview process.

Graduate students are encouraged to apply.

If chosen, you must also attend a staff orientation 1 day prior to the start of the program.

Available to work for the entire program from staff training to move‑out day.
