Job SummaryThe Lead Advisor serves as the primary point of contact for medical students on the Bloomington regional campus, providing academic counseling, advocacy, and coordination of student services. This role does not assess student learning in a formal capacity.
Department Specific Responsibilities- Acts as first point of contact for students and triages concerns, ensuring appropriate referrals and follow‑up with relevant university staff.
- Schedules and conducts individual meetings at least three times a year with all cohort students to provide academic support, career mentoring, and wellness assessment.
- Tracks student progress toward graduation and documents meetings through Qualtrics and the ADRX advising system.
- Collaborates with ADAA to identify at‑risk students, implements remediation plans, and ensures completion of required interventions.
- Coordinates early‑career mentoring by connecting students with career mentors, physician mentors, and other campus leaders.
- Assists in preparing the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) for M4 students.
- Provides knowledge of academic progression processes and policies, including Areas of Concern, Time Away requests, and Leaves of Absence.
- Works with phase 1 and phase 2/3 coordinators to organize wellness and promotional activities such as orientation, match day events, honors ceremonies, and pre‑med outreach events.
- Serves as a point of contact for pre‑med advisors in the IU campus community.
- Collaborates with the Regional Dean to develop, analyze, and evaluate data related to co‑curricular student services in the MD program.
- Provides academic counseling for students pursuing or considering majors, minors, or certificates, guiding academic planning in alignment with curricular requirements.
- Meets with students individually or in small groups to discuss academic programs and future career or graduate school options.
- Assists students in making informed decisions about major selection and potential career paths, assessing interests and academic skills.
- Taught students how to navigate university systems, processes, and policies, fostering academic accountability and long‑term planning.
- Refers students to campus resources such as academic support, placement programs, internships, and study abroad opportunities.
- Maintains confidential student records, tracks academic progress, and communicates relevant information to students and academic offices when necessary.
- Represents advising at campus meetings and recruiting events; develops written advising materials for student events.
- Researches, recommends, or creates best practices for unit initiatives, projects, processes, or programs and may provide guidance to other Academic Advisors.
Education
:
Master’s degree in a related field.
Work Experience
:
Minimum two years advising adult learners; experience with highly competitive or professional programs preferred.

This role requires effective communication, computer proficiency, and occasional movement around campus. The position is largely sedentary with periodic walking within the office environment.
