Position: Assistant Director of Academic Advising (Academic Advisor)

Overview

The Indiana University School of Education seeks an Academic Advisor to support undergraduate students in the School of Education. The role focuses on developmental and holistic advising, understanding undergraduate curricular requirements, and guiding students to resources that support academic success, well-being, and engagement. The position involves collaboration with the Undergraduate and Teacher Education (UTE) office and the advising team to deliver effective student services.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Work as a valued member of the advising team in the Undergraduate and Teacher Education office.
  • Provide developmental and holistic advising to a caseload of undergraduate degree-seeking students in the School of Education.
  • Maintain an understanding of curricular requirements for all undergraduate programs in the School, available resources within the School, and those on the broader campus that support academic success, health, well-being, and engagement.
  • Serve as a triage point for the Director of Academic Advising, assisting professional staff in addressing student crises, fielding inquiries, and escalating as needed.
  • Serve as a primary contact for students exploring major changes into the School from within the institution.
  • Consult, advise, and facilitate programmatic changes as necessary.
  • Manage the assignment of students to advisors from among the undergraduate population.
  • Facilitate programmatic activities involving the UTE Academic Advising team, including planning, logistics, promotion, and execution of initiatives.
  • Monitor and update program sheets, bulletins, and outward-facing documentation of undergraduate program curriculum in collaboration with the Director to support the Associate Dean's vision for the advising team.
General Responsibilities
  • Provide academic counseling for students pursuing or considering majors, minors, or certificates. Guide students in planning their course of study in line with department requirements and campus policies.
  • Meet with students in groups and individually to guide them toward programs that meet educational needs and major/minor/certificate requirements. Assess student satisfaction and engagement with advising and suggest improvements.
  • Assist students in making informed decisions about major and career or graduate school directions. Help students assess interests, values, and academic skills relative to major choices and future options.
  • Teach students how to navigate university systems, processes, and policies. Encourage student accountability in course choices, career direction, and long-term plans. Provide guidance on involvement within IU and the IU community.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources, such as academic support, placement programs, internship opportunities, and study abroad options.
  • Track and monitor academic progress, review and maintain confidential student records to ensure requirements are met, and communicate advising discussions to students and appropriate offices as needed.
  • Represent the advising function at campus meetings and recruitment events. Help develop advising materials for student events. Assess messaging effectiveness and timing of communications related to advising topics and technologies.
  • Research and recommend best practices for unit or campus initiatives and provide guidance to other Academic Advisors.
  • Roles above the Core career level may include expanded duties and leadership responsibilities aligned with the campus advising ecosystem.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum may be substituted for work experience, and vice versa.

Education
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
Work Experience
  • 5 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or a related field.
  • Experience in a student-focused higher education environment is highly desired.
