Position: Assistant Director of Academic Advising (Academic Advisor)

Job Summary

The Indiana University School of Education welcomes applicants for a role within the Undergraduate and Teacher Education (UTE) office. The department information describes the School as a leader in educator preparation with a strong impact on education in Indiana, the United States, and beyond. This position contributes to advising and student support within the School of Education.

Responsibilities
  • Department Specific Responsibilities:
    Works as a valued member of the advising team in the UTE office; provides developmental and holistic advising to a caseload of undergraduate degree-seeking students; maintains understanding of curricular requirements for all undergraduate programs in the School and available campus resources; serves as a triage agent for the Director of Academic Advising and assists professional advising staff in crisis situations;

    acts as a primary contact for students exploring changing majors into the School; consults, advises, and facilitates programmatic changes; manages assignment of students to advisors; facilitates programmatic activities involving the UTE Academic Advising team; monitors and updates program materials and outward-facing documentation in cooperation with leadership.
  • General Responsibilities:

    Provides academic counseling for students pursuing majors, minors, or certificates; conducts group and one-on-one meetings to guide educational planning; assists students with major selection and career direction; teaches navigation of university systems and policies; refers students to campus resources; tracks academic progress and maintains confidential records; represents advising at campus meetings and develops advising materials; researches best practices and provides guidance to other Academic Advisors;

    higher levels may include expanded duties and leadership responsibilities.
Qualifications

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience, and vice versa.

Education
  • Required:

    Master’s degree in related field.
Work Experience
  • Required:

    5 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or a related field.
  • Experience in a student-focused, higher education environment is highly desired.

  • Proficient communication skills; maintains a high degree of professionalism; demonstrates time management and priority setting; high commitment to quality; flexibility to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; willingness to acquire knowledge in area of specialty; thoroughness and dependability; high level of accuracy under pressure; initiative; ability to influence internal and/or external constituents; proficient use of new technology and adaptation to changing practices;

    meets Best Practices and National Standards for Academic Advising; understands FERPA requirements.
Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires effective communication and the ability to operate a computer and standard office equipment. The position involves sedentary work and periods of time moving around an office and campus. The role must be able to perform essential functions with or without accommodation.

Advertised Salary

The anticipated salary for a qualified candidate is $57,000.
