Skills Training Instructor-Network Cable and Fiber Optic Installation

Position Overview

Ivy Tech Community College – Bloomington is seeking an industry‑experienced Skills Training Instructor to launch and deliver a skills training program in network cabling and fiber optic installation. This is a full‑time instructional role responsible for teaching the fiber optic installer and the network cable installation programs.

Salary Range: $55,000–$65,000, based on education, qualifications, and relevant experience.

• Instruction and Curriculum Delivery
  • Deliver all phases of the eight‑week curriculum on site, including boot‑camp orientation, two‑week fiber optic training, and four‑week network cabling training.
  • Lead hands‑on, lab‑based instruction and manage day‑to‑day cohort pacing and student engagement.
  • Prepare students for fiber optic installer certification and network cable installation written (Pearson VUE) and hands‑on examinations.
  • Build and maintain course content in the College’s learning management system (Canvas).
• Student Recruitment, Intake, and Success
  • Recruit and enroll students for each cohort.
  • Manage enrollment, intake documentation, and cohort rosters.
  • Track participant data and report to the Systems Office on a defined cadence.
• Employer Engagement and Career Placement
  • Plan and coordinate the culminating employer fair for each cohort.
  • Manage employer invitations, logistics, and student‑employer connections.
• Laboratory and Equipment Management
  • Maintain the campus training lab and equipment inventory.
  • Ensure BICSI ATF compliance and submit equipment replacement requests.
• Campus and Program Coordination
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders and marketing for outreach.
  • Participate in statewide program meetings and continuous improvement discussions.
• General Faculty and Institutional Responsibilities
  • Maintain student records, attendance, grades, and program documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and College safety standards.
  • Participate in community service, committee work, and campus meetings as assigned.

• Minimum of three years of verifiable field experience in low‑voltage cabling, copper and/or fiber optic installation, or related telecommunications work.
• Documentable experience required for BICSI Technician certification; one year of field experience may suffice with completion of a formal apprenticeship program.
• Demonstrated ability to teach technical, hands‑on content to adult learners.
• Ability to manage a lab‑based learning environment and pace instruction across a cohort model.
• Strong organizational skills and capacity to manage multiple cohorts in parallel.
• Proficiency with data entry, tracking, and reporting for program metrics.
• Clear, professional written and verbal communication skills.
• A combination of technical education, industry certification, and verifiable field experience sufficient to demonstrate mastery of the subject matter.

• BICSI Train‑the‑Trainer authorization.
• ETA Fiber Optic Installer certification or equivalent.
• Experience in workforce development, community college instruction, or apprenticeship program delivery.
• Experience with employer engagement, career fairs, or job placement programming.
• Experience with learning management systems (Canvas preferred).
• Knowledge of the data center, telecommunications, or low‑voltage contracting industry.
• Familiarity with BICSI ATF facility requirements.

• Classroom, hands‑on laboratory, and general campus environments.
• Frequent standing, walking, and demonstration during lab instruction.
• Manual dexterity required for cable termination, splicing, and use of hand and power tools.
• Occasional lifting of up to approximately 40 pounds and travel to external testing sites and other campuses.
• Variable or evening hours may be required depending on cohort format.
