Visiting Professor of Practice in Community Journalism

The Media School at Indiana University invites applications for a Visiting Professor of Practice in Community Journalism to serve a two-year term. This faculty member will launch the Indiana Newsroom, an experiential local news initiative that will work with student journalists and professional news partners in Monroe County and the surrounding region to publish news that serves both the partners and the communities, while offering a high-quality educational experience for students.

The ideal candidate will offer:

  • Significant (minimum 5 years) experience in local journalism
  • Dedication to serving rural communities’ news needs
  • Familiarity with launching new journalistic endeavors
  • Aptitude to work with news partners using a variety of media formats
  • Ability to develop collegial and productive relationships with professional local news partners
  • At least some experience in the classroom or a demonstrated willingness to learn best practices of collegiate education

In addition to launching the Indiana Newsroom practicum, the professor of practice will also develop a community journalism course that introduces students to issues facing southern Indiana communities as well as the governmental, advocacy, and cultural structures and resources that inform local news coverage. Lastly, the professor of practice will work with Media School staff to produce an updated internship matching program for news organizations interested in hiring our students.

A bachelor’s degree is required and an advanced degree preferred, though significant professional experience will be considered in lieu of an advanced academic degree.

This visiting faculty position is made possible by a two-year grant from the Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County, with a goal of extending the project with sustained external funding. This is a ten-month position with potential for paid summer teaching opportunities.

Applications will be reviewed immediately, and the position will remain open until filled. Applications received by March 6, 2026 will receive full consideration.
