Position Summary
The Instrumentation and Calibration Lead provides technical leadership and oversight for the calibration, maintenance, and optimization of instrumentation and control systems across campus facilities and process equipment. This role requires strong technical expertise and leadership skills to ensure all systems operate within specified parameters while maximizing efficiency. The position involves leading a team of technicians, coordinating with external service providers, and implementing solutions to protect equipment integrity and personnel safety.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and mentor a team of instrumentation technicians, assigning tasks, reviewing work, and ensuring quality standards.
- Provide technical guidance and training on calibration procedures and troubleshooting techniques.
- Coordinate team schedules to meet production and compliance deadlines.
- Lead complex troubleshooting and diagnostics for building automation, process control, and analytical instrumentation systems.
- Perform precision calibrations across diverse instrument portfolios (flow meters, pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, etc.).
- Optimize control loop performance and train team members on system improvements for superior environmental control and energy efficiency.
- Execute and supervise multi‑point calibrations on temperature transmitters, pressure sensors, flow devices, pH meters, conductivity analyzers, and analytical systems.
- Utilize dead‑weight testers, dry‑block calibrators, and multifunction process calibrators to achieve required measurement uncertainties.
- Lead team operations with BMS and CMMS, coordinate system updates, and manage manufacturing procedure data.
- Oversee calibrations on critical instruments such as Water for Injection conductivity, TOC analyzers, Clean Steam monitors, and compressed gas purity analyzers.
- Review and approve calibration certificates, maintain databases, and ensure compliance with CGMP.
- Develop and update calibration procedures and establish intervals based on instrument analysis and regulatory requirements.
- Develop risk‑based calibration strategies, analyze data trends, recommend equipment upgrades, and coordinate complex schedules to minimize process disruption.
- Manage vendor relationships for specialized calibration services.
- Develop and deliver comprehensive technical training programs on calibration techniques and troubleshooting methodologies.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and teach others to read technical drawings, P&IDs, and instrument specifications.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Office, Outlook, CMMS systems, and project management tools.
- Valid driver’s license and availability for on‑call leadership responsibilities.
- Ability to coordinate team response during off‑hours emergencies.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities for complex technical challenges and team management.
- Flexibility to work in diverse environmental conditions, including outdoor assignments in various weather conditions.
- Physical ability to work in clean‑room manufacturing environments with gowning and respirator protocols.
- Capability to perform and supervise overhead work and operations at elevated heights.
- Capacity to operate electric hand tools, work from ladders, transport equipment, and lift materials up to 50 pounds.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology, Instrumentation, or related discipline (or Associate degree with equivalent experience).
- Minimum four years of hands‑on experience with instrumentation, controls, and calibration in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or similar regulated environments.
- At least two years in a lead or supervisory role.
- Comprehensive knowledge of calibration standards, procedures, and documentation requirements for analytical and process instruments.
- Advanced proficiency with calibration software and diagnostic tools including Fluke systems and CMMS platforms.
- Strong understanding of process control theory, PID loop tuning, and control optimization strategies.
