Job Description:
The Emergency Department Unit Secretary provides administrative and communication support to ensure safe, efficient patient care in a fast-paced Level III Trauma Center. This role serves as a central communication hub for the department, supporting physicians, nurses, ancillary departments, EMS, patients, and visitors while maintaining accurate documentation and facilitating patient flow.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and prioritize incoming phone calls, emergency notifications, and department communications.
- Facilitate communication between the care team, ancillary departments, inpatient units, EMS, and external agencies.
- Monitor department tracking systems and assist with patient flow activities.
- Prepare and maintain patient records, forms, and department documentation.
- Coordinate trauma activations, STEMI alerts, stroke alerts, and other emergency notifications according to established protocols.
- Assist patients, families, and visitors with information and way finding while maintaining confidentiality.
- Support compliance with regulatory, hospital, and departmental policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED required.
- Completion of Medical Assistant, Medical Secretary classes, or equivalent experience preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the AHA preferred.
- 1-3 years of relevant experience in a health care setting preferred.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- Must be able to complete required (if applicable) training program.
- Requires basic proficiency in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
