The Monroe County Health Department is seeking a compassionate, organized, and community-focused nurse to support clinical public health services, communicable and noncommunicable disease prevention and case management, and school health initiatives aligned with Indiana’s Health First Indiana core public health service areas.

This position will play a vital role in disease prevention, school health collaboration, and public health preparedness by providing vaccinations, screenings, communicable disease investigations, case management, and administrative support services.

This position will respond to and assist with immediate community health needs and events as required, including mass prophylaxis clinics, outbreaks and pandemics, mass treatment sites, and related activities.

The ideal candidate is comfortable vaccinating people of all ages, conducting health screenings, working directly with the public, schools, families, and community healthcare providers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Services
  • Administer vaccines according to current ACIP recommendations, screening procedures for contraindications and precautions, immunization record review, standard precautions, Indiana immunization requirements, Vaccines for Children (VFC) program standards, Indiana Department of Health vaccine storage and handling protocols and Rights of Medication Administration
  • Utilize Children and Hoosier Immunization Registry Program (CHIRP) to review vaccine histories, verify immunization status, enter administered vaccines, and generate immunization reports and school compliance records
  • Conduct health screenings including blood pressure, A1C, blood glucose, and cholesterol
  • Perform blood lead level testing and case management for children with elevated blood lead levels (BLL)
  • Participate in vaccine inventory management, temperature monitoring, vaccine accountability, and reconciliation activities in compliance with VFC and 317 program requirements
  • Serves as a Primary Vaccines for Children (VFC) or back[1]up Coordinator, as assigned
  • Assist with preparation of clinical patient visits including patient intake, documentation, cleaning, and restocking supplies
  • Provide education regarding chronic disease prevention, obesity prevention and management, healthy nutrition and physical activity, and vaccine-preventable diseases and immunization schedules
  • Conduct 8-week family programming focused on physical activity and nutrition, bi-annually
  • Serve as Monroe County Health Department School Health Liaison with local schools to support student health initiatives
  • Support school immunization compliance and vaccine record review utilizing CHIRP and Indiana school immunization requirements
  • Collaborate with schools on communicable disease prevention and response activities
  • Provide or coordinate hearing and vision screenings, lead screening and case management, health promotion activities, evidence-based nutrition and physical activity education, tobacco and vaping prevention education, and injury prevention and safety education including bike safety, water safety, driving safety, suicide and overdose prevention
  • Assist schools with emergency preparedness initiatives including CPR, Stop the Bleed, and health emergency planning support
  • Promote healthy school environments through wellness education and prevention programming aligned with Health First Indiana core public health service areas
Community Health Outreach
  • Participate in community events, mobile health services, health fairs, and outreach programs as assigned and based on community needs
  • Provide outreach and education on infection prevention, fall prevention, obesity prevention, nutrition and healthy eating, and vaccine-preventable diseases as assigned and based on department and community needs
Communicable Disease Prevention & Response
  • Serve as back-up for communicable disease case investigations and contract tracing as assigned and based on department and community needs
