Position: GIS Application and Database Developer (GIS Applications Developer)

Overview

The Indiana Geological and Water Survey (IGWS), a research institute of Indiana University, seeks a GIS Application and Database Developer to design, develop, and maintain enterprise‑level geospatial and relational database systems, web applications, and data services that support IGWS research and geologic modeling workflows.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and administer enterprise geospatial and relational databases, focusing on Microsoft SQL Server and Esri SDE.
  • Implement and manage ArcGIS SDE versioning (branched and traditional), ensure data integrity, perform backups/recovery, and support cybersecurity reviews.
  • Develop and enhance web‑based GIS applications and map services that integrate IGWS data using ArcGIS Server/Online and related technologies.
  • Create and maintain Python‑based ArcGIS tools to support geologic modeling and mapping; perform data extraction, migration, and transformation for heterogeneous datasets.
  • Participate in professional development activities, conferences, and training sessions to stay current on GIS technologies and database management.
  • Contribute to IGWS committees and initiatives that advance geospatial data integration and support scientific research objectives.
General Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, customize, and maintain various GIS applications and specialized routines and modules for database, web, and stand‑alone systems.
  • Evaluate current GIS systems, recommend improvements, document, and execute data quality assurance processes.
  • Analyze GIS systems and databases, prepare estimates and detailed designs, and obtain approvals from users.
  • Ensure data security and prepare system/application documentation.
  • Consult with stakeholders to configure GIS systems for project needs; provide training and support.
  • Research and adopt best practices in system/application development; provide guidance to less experienced staff.
Qualifications

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in geographic information science, geology, computer science, information/data science, or a related field.

Preferred Education

  • Master’s degree in GIS, Geography, Informatics, Computer Science, or a related field.

Required Work Experience

  • At least 2 years of experience in applications development, geospatial data platforms development, or related fields.

Preferred Work Experience

  • At least 3 years of experience in applications development and geospatial data management.
  • Experience in enterprise application development and ArcGIS SDE versioning.

Required Licenses and Certificates

  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to be insured by Indiana University upon hire.

Preferred Licenses and Certificates

  • Additional degrees, certifications, or coursework in data architecture, cartography, or enterprise software development.

Required Skills

  • Strong communication, professionalism, time‑management, and quality‑commitment skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft SQL Server and ArcGIS 9.3 or newer.
  • Strong familiarity with AutoCAD.

Preferred Skills

  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Server, SDE administration, and SQL Server administration.
  • Experience in web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Python, and C#) and API development (ArcGIS API, GeoJSON).
  • Knowledge of version control (Git/Git Hub), cloud services (Azure/AWS), and Power Shell automation.
