The Vice President for International Affairs and the teams of staff in OVPIA's offices are the stewards of international activity across all campuses of Indiana University (IU). We provide strategic leadership and advocacy for all international programs and projects and coordinate the resources necessary to sustain their growth. Our goal is to enable as many students, faculty, and staff as possible to pursue international and intercultural knowledge and experiences and to become engaged global citizens.

The mission of IU Education Abroad is to promote education abroad by Indiana University students through participation in quality programs in a wide range of disciplines. The purpose is to enhance international awareness and understanding and enrich curricula one every campus of the university, as well as to expand educational opportunities abroad for students from broad-ranging backgrounds. As the most effective and dramatic experience by which students can achieve international and intercultural learning, education abroad will contribute significantly to careers in all fields of specialization and should be an integral part of an education at Indiana University.

IU Education Abroad facilitates the education abroad experiences of approximately 4,600 students annually from all Indiana University campuses, with about 75 percent of those students receiving some form of financial aid. We strive to broaden and increase participation in education abroad, international internship and service-learning programs.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Reviews, approves, and manages a proportionally high volume of foreign supplier/foreign currency Pos and international travel/international credit card transaction expense reports.
• Formulates and manages business practices with IU Bursar and Financial Aid to process and track student fees and scholarships/fellowships related to international mobility of both incoming and outgoing students.
• Works with unit leadership to plan budgets and establish business practices that are designed to mitigate typical risks of international higher education activities -- risks such as currency fluctuation, hiring/employment overseas, and compliance with U.S. and foreign tax regulations.
• Interfaces between non-financial employees of affiliated foreign entities and foreign tax/accounting professionals; provides functional advice and training to non-financial colleagues at IU and overseas on financial management and IU best practices.
• Oversees study abroad consortium program budget management; work closely with leadership, on-site international staff and members of the consortia to develop and execute program budgets and associated transactions. Manages annual audit process and tax reporting for affiliated foreign entities.
• Leads the finance-related component of the unit's scholarship team that manages more than $1 million in scholarships annually, liaising with the IU Foundation and external entities.
• Provides high-quality customer service to students and parents navigating complex financial situations and financial aid concerns.
• Supports executives and program management leaders on IU and foreign entity compliance issues, contract review, and human resource activities, with emphasis on how those activities impacts sound and timely financial management.
• Manages current staff of 1 full‑time employee.
