Position: Nurse Practitioner (NP) - Mental Health

Overview

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

Responsibilities

  • The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APN) practices at a high level of specialized knowledge, skill, and proficiency
  • Teaching and counseling individuals, families, and groups are major parts of the APN's activities
  • APNs work autonomously as well as in collaboration with a variety of individuals to diagnose and manage clients  health care problems
  • Act as a health care resource, interdisciplinary consultant, and patient advocate
  • Provide care as a Nurse Practitioner (NP): an APN with prescriptive authority who serves an identified patient panel in collaboration with a physician
  • Core functions include diagnosing and treating acute and chronic health care problems, performing adult care check-ups, and prescribing medications and treatments
  • Diagnose and manage minor trauma, including suturing
  • Teach health promotion and disease prevention to patients
  • Identify individuals, families, and/or communities at risk to promote wellness and prevent disease and/or injury/disability
  • Utilize standards of care and practice in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient care outcomes
  • Demonstrate functional expertise and technical literacy to initiate changes within the Treatment Team to improve care while maintaining standards of practice
  • Actively engage in clinical pertinence reviews, peer reviews, and performance measure assessments
  • Utilize systems thinking to identify and collaborate with center/network level staff to resolve integrated delivery system issues affecting patient care
  • Direct care or manage systems of care for complex client/family and/or community populations to ensure continuum of care and to meet network performance measures
  • Submit a self-evaluation, at least yearly, to supervisor
  • Acquire and use current and new knowledge to impact the mission and changing practice needs of the patient population
  • Maintain personal mastery and knowledge of current practice by regularly attending conferences, education sessions, and scientific meetings to maintain licensure and specialty certification(s)
  • Attend to licensure and professional issues and participate in ongoing professional development
  • Keep abreast of practice standards and participate in ongoing improvement initiatives
