Job OverviewAs the inventory specialist/cashier, you will provide a quality-driven organization and system for all donations received and selling quality items to the public. You will accept donations with a spirit of grace and provide receipts to donors, ensuring that the Mission of The Salvation Army is effectively carried out.
Salary Range$16.23 per hour (starting)
What You Will Do- Receive all donations at the back of the store, issuing tax receipts when requested.
- Avoid accepting broken, damaged, or stained items.
- Maintain a clean and organized back room, separating household donations, books, electronics, and other items from clothing and transporting items to the proper department.
- Follow all Salvation Army policies regarding the sale of merchandise, ensuring inventory quality by adhering to merchandise standards and preventing damage to donated goods.
- Have the necessary boxes for all donations and accessories such as socks, belts, purses, toys, underwear, etc.
- Sort and clean donations as appropriate, then price, hang, bar, and place items on the sales floor.
- Maintain a sense of urgency to keep sorting manageable.
- Inform the store manager when volunteers or community service workers are not performing correctly.
- Operate the cash register: ring up customer sales, give change, and use the card reader.
- Assist with carrying heavy, large, or awkward items when customers need help.
- Accompany a box truck driver for pick‑ups and deliveries as needed.
- Cooperate with the store manager or corps officer on other duties as assigned.
- Adhere to all organization practices, policies, and procedures.
- Perform other tasks assigned by leadership.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of two years of customer service experience.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain The Salvation Army driver qualifications.
- Completion of Safe From Harm training within the first 90 days of employment.
- Background check required.
- Ability to speak, write, and understand English for effective communication with leadership, field personnel, and clientele.
- Computer proficiency with Microsoft products and ability to learn electronic reporting systems.
- Twist, bend, squat, reach, push, and pull as needed.
- Lift up to 60 lbs and move up to 100 lbs.
- Endure exposure to outdoor temperature and possible odors and dust.
- Good speaking, hearing, and vision; excellent manual dexterity.

Working ConditionsWork is performed in a typical thrift store environment, with driving within Monroe County, Indiana. Pick‑ups and deliveries occur at donors’ residential homes. The position requires Saturday work; the store is closed on Sundays.
