Position Overview
The Deli/Bakery Clerk is responsible for maintaining all food service cases, stocking and ensuring product quality during business hours, and providing a friendly, energetic demeanor to customers.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Ensure cleanliness of deli/bakery cases, storage area, and work area, including cleaning shelves and keeping floors free of spills.
- Stock deli/bakery cases, presenting product according to schematics, ensuring proper facing, filling, organization, and accurate tagging and pricing.
- Examine product rotation, monitor expiration dates, and discard outdated or spoiled items.
- Respond positively to customer inquiries, assist with purchases, provide product information, and perform sales and cross‑selling.
- Receive, inspect, and log product shipments for accuracy, temperature, and quality.
- Monitor point‑of‑sale signage, maintain recipe cards, coupons, and promotional materials.
- Operate equipment such as knives, scales, wrappers, compactors, garbage disposals, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
- Prepare various deli/bakery items, using appropriate ingredients, cooking times, and weight measures.
- Use scales and weight measures to accurately weigh and label products.
- Participate in pre‑inventory preparation, including back‑stocking and ensuring tag–product match.
- Sustain high product knowledge and preparation standards.
- Walk department regularly to maintain an organized, sanitary, and clean appearance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalency degree.
- Preferred 1–2 years of grocery retail experience in a food service department.
- Previous experience in a natural foods industry is a plus.
- Maintain the highest level of customer service at all times.
- Adapt to high‑volume retail environments and work in cross‑functional teams.
- Take initiative when problems arise.
- Show flexibility across varied situations.
- Pay advanced attention to detail and prioritize tasks.
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills with peers and management.
- Multitasking and organizational skills.
- Lead, support, and contribute to team goals.
- Work varied hours and days as business dictates.
- Understand Health Department guidelines for grocery retail environments.
- Basic math knowledge for weights and measures.
- Experience with food service equipment (knives, slicers, scales, ovens).
- Ability to cut and weigh meats, salads, and cheeses.
Requires some standing (1–8hours), walking (2–8hours), and driving (2–4hours). Frequent reach and lifting up to 50lbs., occasional climbing and bending, with moderate balance demands. Environmental conditions may include extreme temperatures and ventilation fans.
Compensation & BenefitsBase pay ranges from $14.50 to $16.00 per hour, with raises according to company policy. Additional benefits include paid parental leave, medical, dental, and life insurance, a 401(k) plan with employer match, and employee assistance programs.
