Meat & Seafood Clerk

Responsible for maintaining all meat cases stocked and clean during business hours, assisting customers, and ensuring adherence to department procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain cleanliness of meat and seafood cases, storage area, and work area for sanitation and safety.
  • Stock meat and seafood cases, presenting product, facing, filling, and organizing items as directed by department schematics, and ensuring tag and price accuracy.
  • Examine rotation of all meat and seafood products, paying particular attention to expired stock.
  • Respond positively to customer inquiries and assist with purchases, information, and product selection while working the meat counter; include selling and cross‑selling of products.
  • Receive, inspect, and log products for accuracy of shipment, temperature, and quality.
  • Monitor point of purchase signs; ensure a variety of recipe cards, product coupons, promotional material, and information on complimentary foods are posted.
  • Operate equipment such as knives, scales, wrappers, compactors, garbage disposals, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
  • Monitor proper temperatures at all stages during production of meat and seafood items.
  • Prepare various meat and seafood products, using appropriate ingredients and cooking times.
  • Organize, stack, and rotate all meat products in the cooler and freezer.
  • Weigh and label meat products using scales, weight measures, and tares; package and wrap products following the proper dating procedures.
  • Maintain safety practices while using cutting accessories; comply with mesh glove usage.
  • Participate in pre‑inventory preparation; back stock and ensure tags match products.
  • Sustain a high level of product knowledge and preparation.
  • Perform regular walks of the department to ensure an organized, sanitary, and clean appearance at all times.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalency degree.
  • 1-2 years of grocery retail experience in a meat department (preferred).
  • Previous experience in a natural foods industry is a plus.
  • Highest level of customer service at all times.
  • Ability to adapt to high‑volume retail and cross‑functional teamwork.
  • Initiative in problem resolution.
  • Strong attention to detail, prioritization, and deadline management.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Multitasking and organizational skills.
  • Support and contribute to team goals.
  • Availability for varied hours and days as business dictates.
  • Familiarity with Health Department guidelines applicable to grocery retail.
  • Basic math, weight, and measure knowledge.
  • Proficiency with knives, tenderizers, grinders, and meat machinery.
  • Expert packaging and wrapping skills.
  • Ability to cut and weigh various amounts of meat and seafood.
  • Knowledge of seafood COOL compliance and product origins.
