Overview
Capital Planning and Facilities (CPF) works to ensure that IU campuses are beautiful, functional, and sustainable supporting excellence in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement across the entire university. As a unit of CPF, Facility Operations maintains the physical campus to support research, teaching, and learning at Indiana University Bloomington. Facility Operations provides wide-ranging services aimed at creating a beautiful, well‑functioning campus.
Responsibilities- Drill and punch holes in metal for screws, bolts, and rivets; fasten seams and joints together with welds, bolts, cements, rivets, solders, caulks, metal drive clips, and bonds to assemble components or repair sheet metal items; finish parts using hacksaws, hand, rotary, or squaring shears.
- Inspect individual parts, assemblies, and installations for conformance to specifications and building codes using measuring instruments such as calipers, scales, and micrometers; select gauges and types of sheet metal or non‑metallic material according to product specifications; shape metal material over anvils, blocks, or other forms using hand tools.
- Trim, file, grind, deburr, buff, and smooth surfaces, seams, and joints of assembled parts using hand tools and portable power tools; install door hinges, panic bars, thresholds, motorized projector screens and mounts, and toilet partitions; maintain kitchen equipment, roof gutters, and overhead doors; install and repair roofing and flashing materials.
- Install assemblies including heating and air conditioning ducts and air handlers; balance air flow; repair and clean air handlers as needed; repair air handler coils; weld metal repairs on mobile or stationary equipment.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including general building maintenance duties; drive University vehicles as needed; work any shift as needed; respond to 24‑hour emergency calls; assist with snow removal activities as necessary.
- High school diploma or equivalent (e.g., HSED or GED).
- Five years verifiable journeyman‑level experience in the sheet metal field, OR certificate in Department of Labor (DOL) apprenticed sheet metal trade.
- Possesses a valid driver’s license and the ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.

Job Requirements
The role requires the ability to effectively communicate, handle equipment, remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders or stairs, move objects weighing up to 25 pounds, detect items in close proximity as well as far away, discern between colors, detect objects in peripheral space, discern items in detail, and have good depth perception. The person must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
Availability to work during inclement weather is required when weather emergencies dictate that the department is needed to take care of the campus.
