Maintenance is proud to be a department within the Office of Student Life and is located within the Indiana Memorial Union, the heart of campus. The Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) is a historic 500,000 square‑foot student union that serves as the center of the student experience and hosts more campus visitors than anywhere else at IU.

Position

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining and repairing various systems and equipment within the Indiana Memorial Union. Duties include performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring systems operate efficiently and safely.

Responsibilities
  • Perform skilled and semi‑skilled maintenance and repair work on campus buildings, facilities, equipment or machinery.
  • Assemble, install and/or repair wiring, electrical and electronic components, plumbing/pipe systems, physical structures, fixtures, paint, HVAC systems, locks/access systems, compressors, generators, engines, etc.
  • Diagnose problems and determine corrective solutions, referring to and/or adhering to building codes, blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs as necessary.
  • Repair or replace defective equipment parts using hand tools and power tools, and reassemble equipment.
  • May lead other maintenance staff on projects or assist in a general maintenance capacity when others are in a lead role.
  • Maintain parts, supplies, and equipment; advise supervisor when supplies need to be ordered.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including general building maintenance duties.
  • Drive Indiana University vehicles as needed.
  • Work any shift as needed, including 24‑hour a‑day emergency response.
  • Assist with snow removal activities as necessary.
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
Work Experience
  • Five (5) years verifiable journey‑level experience in relevant trades.
  • OR a certificate in a Department of Labor (DOL) apprenticed trade (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry).
Licenses and Certificates
  • Valid driver's license; ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.

Physical Requirements

This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations.
