Maintenance is proud to be a department within the Office of Student Life and located within the Indiana Memorial Union. Often seen as the heart of campus, the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) is a historic 500,000 square foot student union which serves as the center of the student experience and hosts more campus visitors than anywhere else at IU.
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining and repairing various systems and equipment within the Indiana Memorial Union. This includes performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring systems are operating efficiently and safely.
- Performs skilled and semi‑skilled maintenance and repair work on campus buildings, facilities, equipment or machinery.
- Assembles, installs and/or repairs: wiring, electrical and electronic components, plumbing/pipe systems, physical structures, fixtures, paint, HVAC systems, locks/access systems, compressors, generators, engines, etc.
- Diagnoses problems and determines corrective solutions, referring to and/or adhering to building codes, blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs as necessary.
- Repairs or replaces defective equipment parts using hand tools and power tools, and reassembles equipment.
- May lead other maintenance staff on projects or assist in a general maintenance capacity when others are in a lead role.
- Maintains parts, supplies, and equipment advising supervisor when supplies need to be ordered.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including general building maintenance duties.
- Drives Indiana University vehicles as needed.
- Works any shift as needed. 24‑hour a day emergency response as needed.
- Assists with snow removal activities as necessary.
- High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
- 5 years verifiable journey‑level experience; OR Certificate in Department Of Labor (DOL) apprenticed trade (electrical/plumbing/HVAC/carpentry).
- Possesses a valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.

- Ability to operate the specific tools used in the area of expertise, including related tools and equipment such as common hand and power tools, hammers, hoists, saws, drills, and wrenches, precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices.
- Ability to operate a computer.
