Role Overview

Disabled Veterans’ Outreach Program specialists provide individualized career (intensive) services and facilitate placements to meet the employment needs of Veterans. Special emphasis is placed on serving service-disabled Veterans, other disabled Veterans, and other categories of Veterans as determined by the Secretary of Labor. Specialists are an essential part of the Work One / American Job Center network and work closely with partner organizations and grant programs.

Day in the Life
  • Enroll Veterans with significant barriers to employment (SBE) into a case management system, interview, complete objective assessment, and create an individualized employment plan (IEP).
  • Identify and determine the appropriate career route for each SBE Veteran and the services needed.
  • Engage in outreach activities to identify new SBE Veterans by working with Veteran organizations.
  • Visually search communities to locate SBE Veterans and provide potential resources.
  • Refer SBE Veterans to partner services for training in different career areas.
  • Collaborate with Veteran organizations and grant programs to establish resources and address individual Veteran needs.

What You’ll Need for Success
  • Served on active duty for at least 180 days and received a VA service‑connected disability rating.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Effective communication skills and public speaking ability to present information and interview Veterans.
  • Ability to learn all VA program offerings by the State of Indiana and local job centers.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Internet research skills for labor market information, veteran programs, services, and social media.

You must complete all DOL‑VETS required training as defined by the National Veterans Training Institute (NVTI) within 18 months of hire.

A degree is not required. However, a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) is required.

Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities / Direct Reports

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
