The role of Application Engineer will have a primary focus providing technical expertise and training for 3M’s portfolios within the Automotive Aftermarket Collision Repair Shop. This includes vehicle structural repair, metal finishing, dent repair and related operations. The position involves extensive internal and external training of customers through hands‑on demonstrations at our Skills Development Center and beyond. It will also involve working with new product teams and the creation of applications and support materials that provide practical solutions for our customer base.
Knowledge and experience with repair materials and processes used in the Collision Repair (Automotive), Heavy Duty Truck Repair (Collision), Marine & General Industrial including either manufacturing or MRO (Maintenance Repair Operations) is a requirement for this very specific customer focused position.
- Showcasing 3M product, process and digital solutions and how they can increase profitability for bodyshop customers.
- Relationship management with prioritized large customers (end user and distributor partners)
- Hands‑on product demonstrations for large groups (internal and external training)
- Collaborating with product development teams, channel partners and business teams to provide practical solutions to our customers.
- Creating and implementing customer facing technical collateral and training content.
- Supporting and troubleshooting sales professionals & end‑users with new setups
- Field testing and new product evaluations
- Testing & benchmarking the competitive landscape.
- Developing technical communication and training packages
- Creating and enhancing presentations (PowerPoint and other computer skills)
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
- Technical diploma or higher from an accredited institution AND a minimum of five (5) years of experience in the collision repair industry
OR
- High school diploma/GED or higher and a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in the collision repair industry
AND
- Current, valid driver’s license is required
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
- Fluency in Spanish would be highly valued in this position.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a science, engineering, or business discipline from an accredited university
- Previous experience serving related industrial markets such as paint industry, manufacturing, OEM, or insurance industry.
- Previous experience in application engineering, technical service, technical training and/or technical sales
- Excellent communication & organizational skills (written, verbal, listening and presentation)

This role follows an on‑site working model, requiring the employee to work between our St. Paul Based Training Center and 3M Center in Maplewood, MN. - Travel:
