Black & Veatch is seeking an experienced Power System Protection Engineer to join our Protective Relay Settings Team. The ideal candidate has significant experience in protection and control design concepts, relay setting calculations, relay manufacturer software platforms, and power system analysis and modelling software.
The OpportunityIn this role you will:
- Act as a technical subject matter expert and specialist.
- Develop protective setpoints per industry standards, best practices and client requirements.
- Work with system modeling software programs such as ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM.
- Create downloadable setpoint files on proprietary relay manufacturer platforms (e.g., SEL AcSELerator Quickset, GE Enervista).
- Develop and manipulate logic commonly used in protection and control schemes.
- Develop and apply design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and company policies, providing technical guidance to others.
- Ensure compliance with quality programs, manage budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
- Prepare complex engineering deliverables for multiple projects, conduct research, and develop recommendations for equipment and material selection.
- Coordinate with internal and external team members on moderately complex projects.
- Support business development and client interactions as needed.
- Serve as a technical specialist, design projects of moderate complexity, and provide mentoring.
- Manage performance review processes and mentor lower-level professionals.
- Assist with resource management strategy for small engineering groups.
- 5-10 years experience in Transmission, Distribution, or Power Generation industry.
- Experience with protection and control design concepts, one-lines, schematics, wiring.
- 5 years experience developing protective relay settings.
- Extensive experience with system modeling software (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM).
- Knowledge of protection schemes in Transmission, Distribution, and Renewable Collector Substations.
- Experience using Mathcad and Excel for protective setting calculations.
- Familiarity with communication protocols (DNP, SEL, MMS, Modbus).
- Knowledge of IEC 61850 GOOSE, MMS, SV and its implementation.
- Knowledge of NERC-PRC standards and other industry standards.
- Strong written communication skills and ability to coordinate with teams and clients.
- Teamwork and leadership experience on small projects.
- Experience supporting proposal development and engineering estimates.
- Strong leadership skills and interest in developing early career professionals.
- Experience in QA/QC capacity.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the applicable state.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
- Minimum 5 years related work experience.
- Ability to complete pre‑employment screening requirements (background, drug screen, etc.).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in the U.S. (preferred).
Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment, based on manager discretion, job performance, and assignments.
