Purpose

BGM is seeking an experienced R&D Tax Manager with strong technical expertise in federal and state Research & Development tax credits. This role is primarily hands‑on and delivery‑focused, responsible for managing the full lifecycle of R&D tax credit studies—from technical qualification through calculation, documentation, and support of filed claims.

The ideal candidate enjoys deep technical analysis, working directly with client data, and ensuring claims are accurate, defensible, and compliant with applicable regulations. While this is currently an individual contributor role, there is long‑term potential for expanded responsibility, including mentoring staff and contributing to service development, for individuals who demonstrate strong technical leadership and client impact.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Perform detailed technical and financial analysis to determine eligibility for federal and state R&D tax credits
  • Evaluate qualified research activities, qualified research expenses (QREs), and applicable methodologies
  • Analyze and document technical uncertainties, business components, and nexus to permitted purpose
  • Review and interpret IRC §41, Treasury Regulations, IRS guidance, and relevant case law
  • Assess risks and support positions taken on R&D claims with defensible technical documentation
  • Prepare and review R&D tax credit calculations, forms, and supporting schedules
  • Draft clear, well‑supported technical memoranda and client‑facing reports
  • Collaborate with client personnel to gather documentation, conduct interviews, and understand development activities
  • Coordinate with internal tax teams to ensure proper integration of R&D credits into income tax returns and provisions
  • Respond to IRS and state tax authority inquiries related to R&D claims, including audits when requested
  • Maintain current knowledge of legislative, regulatory, and procedural changes impacting R&D credits
  • Develop and refine templates, work papers, and internal processes to improve consistency and quality
  • Deliver timely, accurate work that meets professional standards and client expectations
Required Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
  • 5–7+ years of public accounting experience, with significant hands‑on R&D tax credit experience
  • Advanced technical knowledge of R&D tax credit rules, calculations, and documentation requirements
  • Strong understanding of tax accounting principles and financial statements
  • Proven experience performing technical tax research and applying guidance to client facts
  • Ability to independently manage R&D studies from start to finish
  • CPA license or CPA‑eligible preferred
  • High attention to detail with strong analytical and documentation skills
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts to clients and internal teams
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines
  • Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, evolving environment
  • Willingness to travel to client sites as needed
