Position SummaryThe primary goal of the Health Care Specialist is to manage student health, injuries, and illnesses promptly, work with medically fragile or cognitively impaired students, and perform technical nursing procedures under the direction of a Licensed School Nurse.
Primary Job Functions- Administer first aid, emergency, and episodic care in accordance with licensure.
- Monitor students and refer to a Licensed School Nurse when necessary.
- Assist in planning with the Licensed School Nurse for services to students with special needs.
- Assist with Special Ed evaluations.
- Develop Individual Health Plans under supervision of the LSN.
- Serve as a team member of Health Services; attend IEP meetings as representative.
- Maintain health records (emergency card, pupil health records, physicals, medical documentation).
- Maintain data logs and compile year‑end reports.
- Document all duties performed accurately.
- Maintain confidential health files with restricted access.
- Maintain third‑party billing documentation.
- Assist with school screenings under supervision of a Licensed School Nurse.
- Comply with communicable disease procedures and collect immunization data per state mandates.
- Administer medications and perform complex medical tasks under direction of a Licensed School Nurse.
- Support technical health needs as delegated by a Licensed School Nurse.
- By Building Principal or Special Education Director.
- By supervising LSN or Lead Nurse.
- Provide selected Health Care trainings.
- Participate in local time studies.
- Current licensing by the Minnesota Board of Nursing as an LPN or RN.
- Ability to interact positively with people of all ages.
- Current CPR certification.
- Current First Aid certification.
- Ability to work within the scope and practice of the position.
- Experience with Windows‑based software.
- Prompt, regular, and reliable attendance.
- Effective communication with students, parents, co‑workers, supervisors, and community.
- Demonstrated appreciation of diversity.
- No written reprimand or higher within the past 12 months.
- Not on a Performance Improvement Plan.
- Must participate in a standardized interview process; a 70% score is required to pass.
- Knowledge of working with children with special health needs or involved in special education.
